I got the same impression souj - that walt was talking to gus in both scenes.

    Spoiler: show
I also think that gus sent a much firmer message by killing victor so personally and gruesome. I don't think it was out of character for him to do at all given the circumstances. I was a little surprised at jesse's reaction to the whole thing but that picture posted for him earlier was perfect. "not a single fuck was given"

More family members will get involved is what i predict.
I would agree if hank wasn't still shitting into a bedpan. I could see him back on the job maybe at the end of this season, but unless they do a pretty big time lapse sometime this season I don't really see him making a full recovery until later. Though that may just be what they want you to think after the premiere.

Wow, what an opener. I did the whole hand on mouth shocked face when Gus did Victor. But there's always room for comedy in BB with Walt & Jesse in the matching white pants/Kenny Rogers tee.

Man that scene in the diner was like a giant shoutout to Tarantino.. Kenny Rogers was a bit over the line tho I'd probably woulda gone with Santana.

My interpretation of Gus killing Victor was that he was punishing Victor for his several fuckups, but ALSO showing Walt that he would not try to replace him again (after the whole cook-book monologue). Doing it himself was to show that he's pissed, capable, and not to be fucked with. Perhaps it was also to show Walt and Jesse what would happen the moment they ceased to be useful to him (I think that's what Jesse was suggesting at Denny's).

tonight's episode was, ok, but just, OK

    Spoiler: show
Breaking Bad has an ugly sophomoric inclination-- Gus slicing/cuddling Gus-associate without saying a word as he wordlessly went about his business was contrived to paint a badass moment of badassness that no one can doubt the badassness of how badass it was--the cartoon character cartel hitmen come again.

some allowance can be made as television is an inherently juvenile medium but the show transcends to raw unadulterated art in its quieter moments. a weary Walt telling Jessie the moment he should have died, a mourning Jessie listening to the voicemail of his dead lover to hold onto her, the cycle of addiction and relapse and moral compromise played out over and over again as they are in life with little lasting significance and less resolution, those moments are the show at its most compelling not the adrenalized scenes of ratcheted tension and high violence

the violence and tension are entertaining, undeniable, and the contrast is nice, but sometimes it feels as though i suffer through the action waiting for the soul

I'm fairly sure that they aren't required for episodes that have publicly aired. At least, that's been the standard for a while now. People always bitch about spoilers, but then someone always points out that they're fucking retarded for clicking the thread before seeing the most recent episode. Every now and then, a mod will throw their hands up in exasperation and say fuck it, spoiler tags for XX hours after the episode, but that rarely lasts more than a week or two.

As for people checking the thread for a download link, I propose that we just make a sticky for download links ONLY with no discussion and just throw links to everything there (with labels, of course). Then people would have NO excuse for coming to the thread without having seen the latest aired episode.

Victor not only got seen leaving the crime scene he also didn't have time to clean up the mess. So Gus used him as a quick example to show Hank and Jessie that he's not to be fucked with.

That's just Gus's character. It wasn't done for the sake of the scene. Gus has always been a man of few words, especially when pissed off. Look back to the conversation between Walter and Gus after he hit the 2 dealers with his car.
I was surprised to see Gus deal with someone with his own hands, but he's always been an extremely strict no bullshit badass.

Was so not expecting a death in the first episode and obviously not from Gus. The scene where Victor is cooking and Walt is making jokes while they're waiting for their outcome to be decided had me cracking up. Jesse stole the show though and i'm amazed how much better he's gotten over the seasons. You could see his transformation and leads me to believe it's going to be Walt vs. Jesse this season.

What makes you say that? They seem as strong as ever to me, Walt seemed to be particularly caring towards Jesse during his pleadings with Gus and later at the diner.

Just the way Walt looked at Jesse at the diner. He senses he's changed, and rightfully so, after killing someone. Also i think Gus sees that in Jesse now after he didn't even flinch while watching Victor die, while Walt was on the verge of throwing up. That could be an angle also.

I also wonder if the DEA mistakes Gale for Heisenberg because of his notes or if there's clues in it about Walt.

I think this was perhaps a subtle, yet comedic, way to signify that they were still at conflict with Gus. Kenny Rogers owns a chain of chicken restaurants, and could be seen as a competitor to Gus' Los Pollos Hermanos chain.

Or quite possibly, they just decided Kenny Rogers was funny. The sizing sticker left on Walt's shirt was a nice touch, as well.

I don't think Jesse would have a problem going against Walt if he found out that Walt watched Jane die. Between the two, though, Jesse definitely seems like the safer one to work with.

Awesome episode. I also thought the diner scene was a shout-out to Tarantino, as soon as the scene started I looked at my girlfriend and was like "Hell yeah Pulp Fiction!"

I just hope they don't change Jesse to some psycho mad man or something silly, I understand why he was acting like that at the diner, but hope that fades away rather quick.
