Seriously though, what the fuck is up with DirectX .dll files?

Got a brand new computer. Installed DirectX 9.0c from microsoft. Try to run FFXIV Benchmark, get the "Cannot find d3dx9_41.dll" error. Find the specific missing file and put it in my system32 folder. Still get the error, after restarting repeatedly, blah blah.

    Say fuck it.

    Install The Witcher.

Try to run it, get the "Cannot find d3dx9_35.dll" error. Find the specific missing file and put it in my system32 folder (from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?d3dx9_35). Still get the error, after restarting repeatedly, blah blah.

Now, finding a solution to my specific problem would be neato.

However, I don't understand how the fuck this problem (and it's many variants) can STILL be a fucking problem for so many people. Why doesn't the DirectX install just ...contain all the DirectX files in it? Are developers just fucking retarded or am I missing something? How can I possibly be having the exact same problems that people were having 12 months ago, on a brand new machine?

    It's just unbelievable.

Forgive the rant, any tips would be appreciated. I tried to install the newest drivers for my 6770M card, but upon downloading the driver package from ATI (catalyst_mobility_64-bit_util.exe) I get the error: ATI Catalyst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer. The version of your graphics adapter is not supported. Please contact your notebook manufacturer for a graphics driver update.

Ok, go to the hp.com website, click drivers, enter computer model, but the only drivers they have in there are for the Intel integrated graphics, not the Radeon card.

Awesome. I'm out of ideas. Got any?

as far as the drivers go, I know mobile graphics drivers are, or were, generally receiving spotty support, but I thought AMD was changing that. Did you have the HP dv6t? It sounds familiar from that other thread and there seems to be a few discussions on this around on notebook forums. Here's the one I'm reading now, though the forum's format looks like assholes: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-p...dv7tqe-28.html - even if that's not yours there's talk about that specific card at least. the thread itself is crazy long but the spot around there seems to have discussion on how to get the drivers to install. If you can't find a straight answer it might be worth just asking them directly instead of sifting through 50+ pages.

There used to be something called mobility modder that dealt specifically with this when driver packages blocked install because of notebook hardware, but it doesn't look like it's supported anymore.

as for .dlls, no idea on those mentioned specifically but have you seen anything about needing to register them before being able to use them? If not, try that and see if anything comes of those errors. http://ss64.com/nt/regsvr32.html - necessitates the command line but it's no big deal since you already know the location of where you placed them.

It's a DV7tqe (quad-edition) HP, yeah. I'll take a look at those links and try some stuff, thanks for a new lead.

After a shitload of re-re-reinstalling, got both to work. Not sure about the video card drivers, but I'll try some things. Feel free to lock or delete thread, I was just frustrated.

I'm lookin' at that forum again and they actually have a ridiculous amount of documentation for your laptop series. Did HP's site just list your model as dv7tqe or was it 6000 series? (I think the dv7tqe is just a model within the 6000 series)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-p...rs-lounge.html
    - which links to:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...roduct=5078661 (contains stock manufacturer drivers for both intel and AMD)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-d...xxx-intel.html (driver tables for all models in the series with specifics listed for the 6770M)

From the driver tables they have listed and for what models even have the 6770M, it looks like you have the dv7t 6000 series so this should all be applicable.

That should at least functional, stable drivers for both the intel integrated set and the ati card, and beyond that you can tinker with trying to get the newer drivers straight from AMD working later on. It looks like some on that gaming thread are recommending installing the intel drivers from HP's site and then installing the actual display driver and Catalyst Control Center each separately on top of that to get the newer drivers working. lol

If that's a hassle I'd just stick with what's listed from HP.
