Sleep learning, is this real and a good way to learn?

I've been trying to learn basic language speaking with rosetta stone and was curious if sleep learning via headset/mp3/cd player would enhance my learning a little bit, even at 5% increase in memorization. I'm a heavy sleeper tho so I guess thats where you people who might know something. You people is not to be taken offensively btw. Just meaning the bright people who can share there wisdom on this and help me grow. Thank you.

Maybe sleep memorizing. Since you're pretty much unconscious, it just ends up as useless information that you probably will never be able to consciously recall. It would be just like a dream that you can't remember.

Well..even tho the dexter thing makes sense (loved it when I was a kid and still do lol) I still don't find any real evidence here supporting your peoples answers. And yet I still haven't researched myself on this matter cause I am lazy atm and was hoping for a quick answer. This is what I get. Well I am sorry I wasn't a little more demanding on how I wanted it answered such as links, info, names, places etc. But whatever. Still waiting for more information.

This will do nothing but waste precious time that could have been spent dreaming of... anything else.

Sleep has a part in learning, yes... but from stuff you've done during the day.

Sleep is important for memory consolidation, but it's very difficult to form new memories during sleep. The parts of the brain that form logical coherent representations of anything are largely shut down during sleep, which is why dreams involve suspension of disbelief, irrational decisions, and physically impossible things. If sleep became an active learning environment for forming *new* memories of things that actually happen or are true, I suspect you might begin to worry about your sanity.

What you can do is study some, then take a nap, then study again, and then take another nap.

There are studies showing that sleep improves retention/understanding of material, but as for what you're asking - I haven't seen shit. But yeah, study up to an hour before you go to sleep then relax before you sleep and you'll find that your retention of the material is probably better. (That is only if you are like the majority of the population, because as with anything, nothing applies to everyone)

I don't know how the fuck I'd be able to sleep with both a pair of headphones on, and some person jabbering in my ear for hours.

Ignore sleep learning, all you need is to be within 10 yard of a books to absorb its knowledge. At least, that's what I like to think when I'm actively [procrastinating] studying.

Did a quick skim of PsychInfo, only relevant peer reviewed journals I found were from the 60 and 70s. Having said that, some were in favour of sleep learning, with one article about helping those with mental damage learn sounds through sleep learning. Take it for what it's worth. If you have access to the PsychInfo database, just search "sleep learning."

Its official name is hypnopaedia if you desire to research more into it. There are a wealth of studies that were done in the past on it, and the conclusion was pretty much 'no'. There are definitely correlations to sleep and memory, but superimposing things via natural sensory means does not seem to register a significant impact on memory.
