There is a distinct lack of reward for a lot of the powers. They are great visually at first, lackluster as soon as you leave the sewers you got them in. I'm playing a game about a guy that uses electricity as his powers and I am relegated to using everything just like a gun. Hand to hand combat in the game is an afterthought, and useless. The enemies all use guns and have fantastic accuracy, why bother moving in to fist fight, especially with the lack of a lock on feature. Why include it at all then?
    Fix?
Make the face buttons context sensitive on lock-on, giving you less convoluted access to you powers and increasing the situations where you actually want to use them.

The premise of the game is cool, and it was almost fun just being a superhero in a big city for a while. The novelty wears off, and then you're left with pretty dull game mechanics.

The morality was built up in the marketing process and does not quite deliver, but look at the story. What is the game itself trying to accomplish? It's trying to say something about the ends of that morality NOT the process. You are either a hero and lauded with praise and admiration or an infamous villain who is feared. It's about extremes and not moral ambiguity or neutrality, which is boring. Speaking of boring. The characters range from severely pallid to really annoying. Zeke being the main culprit here, followed by Cole's woman then the fbi agent.

As a 'sandbox' infamous suffers the flaw of damn near every sandbox ever made. A fantastic city, in which nothing happens except in cutscenes. For a game that starts of with a bang, literally, it fails at a lot of exposition. Nothing worthwhile happens for the first 4 hours of gameplay. You are instead pointed here and there on the overworld. The entire game is essentially one big fetch quest. While most games fall into this, infamous really fails at hiding this, and people that pick up on it give up on the game rather quickly. Do one or two quests, go into the sewer. Do one or two quests, go into the sewer. Ad infinitum.

The game gives you an upgrade system for your powers, but it ends up falling lat because none of the upgrades are gratifying. No real visible changes to powers as you upgrade them. I honestly found myself forgetting to upgrade.

There is a severe lack of variance in enemy types. For a game this 'fantastic'. You've got skinny shooting guys. Fat shooting guys and kamikaze blow up guys. Change skins, rinse and repeat.

Getting around the city can be fun, but it is hampered by Cole's sticky fingers. He catches everything. You wanting him to catch it is not relevant to what he does. All that parkor and climbing and fences are still an imposibility. What?

I'm not sure how a game could have so much going for it but still come out the way infamous did.

I'd like to go on and not be as convoluted but I need to be up for work in 6 hours. We'll continue this whenever I feel like it.
Okay, fantastic. Some of the things you listed are well known complaints for the game, such as the superficial morality system, the velcro hands, and the eagle vision motherfuckers with the assault riffles, now let's bring this to a head:

Can you integrate everything you've just said into why it ultimately resulted in a good finished product? Or more specifically, why do most gamers who actually played the game, find it to be at the very least an adequate gameplay experience?

Sure, we can talk about how the hoi polloi doesn't know any better and will eat shit no matter how it is served, but let's not forget we're not talking about movies here. A movie can be sucessful by simple virtue of keeping you entertained for a few hours, but a videogame has to keep sustained interest for much longer and gamers demand satisfactory interaction.

Let's not forget to make a distinction between sales, and how a game is "reviewed" by the gamers who have played it. For example, you have a game that sells well, like FFXIII, that is utter contrived shit. But the game itself received plenty of heavy criticism for its faults, almost to a flamewar level. Making some question whether the game only sold well on expectations given its brand. Meanwhile, Infamous, a game with no previous brand recognition, was far better received by gamers who played it.

Why is it, that given its faults, the game ultimately ended up satisfying gamers? I'm not asking you from a developpers standpoint, i'm asking you from a gamer's standpoint, and not just your own. Why do you think the game is so well received?

it is important to state your distaste towards something as strongly as possible. preferably in a way that belittles others who may enjoy it. it is also important to do all of this while wearing a keffiyeh

Shareholders and some publishers only care about how many units a game sells, and could not give any less of a shit of what gamers actually think of the content of a game. I am almost certainly that SE is one of these companies. To them FFXIII was a success purely on the merit that it sold well; ignorance is bliss when it comes to what a bunch of faggotry the game was in terms of content.

I'd say FFXIII was an okay game, because what saved it was okay gameplay that was enjoyable enough and pretty colours. It was literally a turd sandwich covered in sparkles that was fun to play with for a while.

FFXIII both is a bad example and an excellent one. Because despite the supposed hate it receives. It has a normalized rating of 83 on metacritic per users and game reviewers, where infamous has a normalized rating of 85 by 87. Some people stand by the game staunchly and the people that detest it are simply a vocal minority of which I am a member. I pointed at the things that were done well enough by the game. Perhaps that was enough to sway people from the perception of it being tripe. Who knows. I am not one to accept a 'finished' product and not weigh the flaws against the positives. The issues I listed are not enough to demean a game individually, but put together. They were enough for me to have an issue with the game. You made the distinction between movies and video games but in truth, I find them more similar than you do. I cannot speak for why anyone else likes the game in truth, because even as a gamer, I detest it.

I like how the keffiyeh/hipster comment came back Tryv. We all know wear one to be 'painfully' different at all times. Yet of the millions of pictures of me out there, none have me wearing one. If you own this, you're hipster. Gotcha. I might as well complete the cycle and get a faux-hawk and some Buddy Holly glasses.
