You're overestimating them. Hard subs have been phazed out greatly. Check out http://www.ji-hi.net/ for some of the recent anime seasons. Some groups still cater to the silly people and release a 480p .avi version, although they never bother updating them for revisions.I think you're underestimating hard subs, as there are far more groups releasing AVI or MP4 versions of shows, especially the popular series. The last hard subbed show I grabbed was like 1-2 days ago for Ao no Exorcist 25. Most of my friends won't even watch an anime unless they can play it on PS3/360, so finding MP4 files is easy (though that much started with PSP-ready anime which was like 5-6 years ago).
Though it was wrong to say soft subs are rare in general, hard sub anime is easily obtainable if you aren't a quality junkie.
Pretty pointless if you ask me, a few minutes on google and I was able to play mkv files from my computer on my ps3. The only hardsubbed anime I've downloaded in the past couple of years was either old (pre .mkv existance) or naruto.
Did .ogm cease to exist because .mkv was just superior?
H.264 > OGM
made it extinct pretty much.
Yeah pretty much. I still give ogg props though, as far as I'm concerned its creating lead directly into the <3 that is mkv.
Just blasted through the entirety of [C], man that was great.
Wish it was a full season show, it could have stood to be a bit more fleshed out.
So I just finished No. 6 and like...what the fuck? I feel like I must've glossed over some major explanation somewhere, but that ending just didn't satisfy me :\
Nah, you didn't miss anything. No. 6 had shitty pacing and for what they did they needed a lot more episodes to not make the ending crap. Spending all that time in shanty town was a mistake when you have to rush the finale like that. Even a bit longer in the correctional facility would have been better.
So much wasted, I didn't hate it though...
I didn't either, was like only 4.5 hours of my life if you skipped OP/ED. Worth it imo
It won't be the first series with a rushed ending...seem to be a common trend in Japan.
In overall, No.6 was a let down. I don't regret watching it since we got a few interesting scenes, and I loved the Nineteen Eighty Four fakes utopia deal, but the Queen plot was completely unneeded to the story. If the show was about human versus nature, or another hippy bullshit, it would have been fine, but it was a bad move to come up with this ridiculous lore in the context. "Magic" should have been in the very first episode if they wanted to take that route.
And as a whole, the final battle worked out way too well considering how vague their plan was.
Anyone watch anime on their PS3 or stream anime to any devices? I notice that subs are not formatted like they are on my PC and I tried to fix that. Certain releases like Coalgirls appear to work fine with avisynth/mencoder with PS3 media server, but others only work with mencoder and the subs are in a plain font, not formatted (e.g. HorribleSubs). Trying to play them with avisynth/mencoder just fails and says 'corrupted data'.
I think you'd need to have the file contain hard subs like .avi/.mp4
Coalgirls include the actual font files as attachments in the MKV file. Other groups may or may not do this as well, so if the font isn't installed on the transcoding PC a default font is used instead or fails outright like you have described.
Random anime recommendation~
Ergo Proxy

Was pretty well animated, nice story and action.
I saw around half of it on cable years ago, but scheduling or apathy caused me to drop it. Maybe I'll finish it one of these days.
But this is the first thing that always comes to my mind when Ergo Proxy gets a mention.
Anyways, I'm going through Katanagatari atm. The first two eps had me "eh, amusing, but I probably won't archive it", three was ok, but then four... "oh, you bastards".
Also, between [C] and now, I caught up in Black Lagoon with Roberta's Blood Trail. I did not expect it to tie up like that.
Ergo Proxy is good, but the story and ending is balls to the wall confusing and weird. I definitely didn't like the ending, but I sure as hell liked getting there.
The episode where they get stranded in the middle of no where while waiting for the wind is one of my favourite episodes of all time. Not to mention the music, art and animation are all great. Even the English dub isn't bad.
not to mention the most adorable imoutorobit ever

Ergo Proxy was just weird and awkward as hell for me lol.
What the hell, WHAT THE HELL.
Fuck you Nisiosin.
Katanagatari finished.
