Random Anime Thread.

As much I like seeing fanservice, if the anime starts going the route in every episode, trying to get the female character(s) in a sexual position or breast/pantie shots, I'm going to quickly get disinterested in the series. Pretty much takes the anime far from the plot. IE: Girls Bravo, Strike Witches S1, Dog Days S1, Infinity Stratos.

I like some fanservice, but generally all it's used for is to cover up how shitty the story or the characters/setting is. If everything else is great, fanservice is more than welcome (as long as it doesn't take away from the show).

Fanservice can't even hide how awful Muv Luv TE is; pretty much just a crutch.

Then again, I fucking hate moeshit, and pretty much everything else not-mecha.

I don't mind fanservice if the anime itself is still interesting to watch without it. Like Godannar is chock full of fanservice in the form of tits and ass but it's still very entertaining to watch without it(and they even make jokes at the expense of T&A). If the anime offers nothing redeeming besides fanservice then its meh to me.

Edit: And by fanservice in my post I mean entirely referring to female fanservice. Stuff like homages(Zaku/other related MS in Turn A) while are still fanservice I just consider homages since fanservice in the female form has become far more common in the last ~12 years in popular anime.

I hate when a potentially good story becomes contrived just to accomodate a bunch of fanservice. For that reason, I look rather unfondly on most fanservice in anime, because more often than not it's a huge distraction to the story rather than just a bit of fun here and there. Some animes do it right (Bakemonogatari, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia), but most don't.

When it really comes down to it, I watch anime in hopes of seeing a good story that will move me or make me think. If I want to see a bunch of T&A, I will go find some porn, rather than relying on a bunch of lame ecchi shots to get me going. Simple as that.

On the homage side of things, I LOVE homages (Eureka 7 AO had some). I especially love shows that make fun of other shows or make a ton of pop culture references, like Gintama and Haiyore! Nyaruko-san. When done right, those kinds of shows are just fun as hell, and that feeling you get when you recognize something and go "Oh! yeah! I know that!" is awesome. The occassional shout-out homage is great too. I really don't have a problem with those at all and have a hard time seeing why anyone would, except for when it's so incongruous to the show it's in that it pulls the viewer out of the show and back into reality.

The other way around.

Rave was very popular and as a result Fairy Tail came into existence.

Fun fact, the assistant illustrator of both FT and Rave went on to author Yankee-kun to Megane-chan and Yamada and the 7 Witches (both great, funny manga)
