There were some bits at the beginning where I was questioning what was going on with certain characters and events that were mentioned (New red hair girl/Flay stand-in and this "Stolen Freedom" event, which I think would be a VERY BIG DEAL that the top mech of the last 2 years was stolen). Which there was a good fan theory I seen flying around was that the new bad guys brainwashed someone to steal the Freedom and bring it to their country so they could fight against the suit itself. Which I can see the logic behind it, it also could explain why most of the bad guys were so good against Kira, aside from the mind reading/manipulating powers. Following this theory, the group did Batman levels of prep work against Kira but not much against the others. The first fight the bad guys appeared to be using just plain superior suits compared to Kira and Co.
Pacing was a bit rushed for me, nukes were dropped on a new country and then the Requiem "retaliation", all happened with what felt like under 5 minutes of screen time. I understand why it had to feel this way since it meant to be shown as a retaliation strike. But there wasn't even time to understand the full casualties besides it casually being shown Nukes went off over the first city with ??? people and then laser strike hits Moscow with little mention how many died. I was actually sad to watch the fate of the Archangel but thankfully (some might say bullshit) most of the crew was able to survive, but the ship and crew lived through two major wars, sad to see it go out like that.
I was a little disappointed when the main plot just ended up being the back half of the Destiny series again with the motivations. I was waiting near the end to see if the Earth racist guy was going to pop up again, you know, the whole reason why this movie started in the first place. But maybe he was never real in the first place and these people were just manipulating everyone from the start.
I did think most of the mobile suit combat was great, even though they are CGI vs hand drawn in the OG but no arguments there. The opening fight with Kira more or less soloing most of the army was great for me as a Kira supporter. Them walking his character back a bit made sense as well since he wasn't much of an emotional force at the end of the Destiny series, and with a title like "Freedom" in the movie, he has to have some kind of character arc. As a kid who never got any actual on screen military training, then him struggling with wanting to help Lacus end the war but only knowing how to do that by fighting along with his hero complex makes sense to me. Athrun was honestly the best character in the movie, one of the more level headed people in the movie and series as a whole for the most part, even though he didn't get a lot of screen time compared to the others. Shin was actually growing on me here since he wasn't in the whole revenge/vengeance mode the entire time he was on screen.
The ending fighting with the Mighty Strike Freedom was so OP and over the top I was just busting out laughing, granted I did love when Kira was OP in the TV show and would just dunk on people (My old avatar here was of the SF for the longest time). Granted I am a person who likes over the top OP characters and I know there are plenty of Kira haters out there and I can see their argument.
