Hard disagree with the Rebuild movies. The third movie was so fucking bad the fourth movie had to spend its entirety explaining it away. And even then no one still knows what the fuck exactly happened. The first half of it is a glorified retelling of the Shinji runs away episode from the original anime series.

Both movies sucked and anyone who tries to 2deep4u is fucking lying. The anime series and End of Evangelion make more sense by comparison. The last 30-40 minutes of 3.0+1.0 is just an endless stream of nonsensical drivel you almost feel forced to finish just because.

The shift in tone and direction after the first two movies just feels like the higher ups got involved and had a different idea for the story. God forbid actual character development occurred. Nah. Lets just keep everyone angsty and refuse to explain shit just to keep the characters angsty.

Haven't seen it in a long time but I remember liking 3.0+1.0 quite a bit. 3.0 was trash the first time and somewhat bearable on the rewatch leading up to the fourth one.

Who’s just thrown into the story with zero explanation and a vague backstory that she was colleagues with Gendoh, Yui, and Fuyutsuki. But hey, glasses and big boobs!

So to answer Zealot’s original question. No. The Rebuild movies are not worthwhile at all. Maybe watch the first two and then imagine your own ending.

Because that’ll be exponentially better than the garbage they tried to feed you afterwards.

I didn't hate Mari and I actually liked that they put her with Shinji in the end because the entire rest of the cast absolutely shit on that dude for the entire movie series and didn't deserve a single thing from him. Especially in 3.0. Complete character assassinations of Misato and Asuka. Among others. That movie was an abomination and the fourth movie being decent only barely salvaged things.

And that’s probably my biggest gripe with the last two films.

Never mind the stupid convoluted nonsense of everything going on. That’s just Evangelion in a nutshell. It’s the character assassinations that piss me off the most.

Misato goes from cheering Shinji on at the end of the second movie, to hating his guts for some half-assed reason about self-hatred. Oh and she has a kid with Kaji who she ignores. Despite the entire theme from the original anime of her wanting a family with him.

Asuka is a different character entirely. But she gets naked a lot cuz remember that was a thing in the 90s!

Rei and her endless army of clones dying after they rediscover themselves is fucking tired. I don’t care anymore.

Ritsuko has been relegated to be a parody of herself. She’s nothing more than the token plot device scientist who makes everything work.

We still barely understand what was Fuyutsuki’s motives. Now with the added mystery involving Mari.

And Tymon is right.

Mari may have been a random ass inclusion, but at least she was the only character willing to talk to Shinji at the end. Everybody else was so mind-numbingly stupid and self righteous.

I absolutely love the franchise. But maybe it’s been awhile since some of you have watched the films to realize how much damage the third movie did to the brand as a whole and how much the fourth movie had to suffer because of it.

I cannot in good faith recommend them to anyone.

Toonami got Tokyo Revengers recently. I have heard of it but never watched it. I am not into it so far. Feels boring. Is it worth sticking with?

I ended up liking it way more than I thought I would. Is it the greatest series? No, but it was an interesting enough watch.

Opening and ending themes are catchy as hell.

watching Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time and 5 eps in itttt'sss fiiiinnneee. kinda crazy the one thing i've heard about this show over and over is 'Shinji is a bitch' 'Shinji is a crybaby' 'Shinji is so annoying'. like maybe it gets much worse but rn he's a 14 yo with an abusive/neglectful father, no mother, getting thrown into traumatizing life and death combat that he mans up for and goes into over and over again?? he pouts a lot and runs away for a sec but fuck off this kid is still one of the bravest 14 yos in existence he has the right to be a little fucked up

I still maintain that at the outset, Renton Thurston from Eureka 7 is a bigger more pathetic bitch than Shinji.
Maybe he gets better, but it's so bad that I couldn't get past the first third of the show.

I only watched the original with the Shinji + Asuka together after the apocalypse ending. I think that's what I remember, at least. Are the others since then anything worthwhile?

The Rebuild movies are worth watching if you're a fan of the series. But to appreciate it, you have to commiting to watching all four and you must have watched the original (not necessarily recently)

The best way I can explain it is that it's like the Final Fantasy VII reboots.

It's a multiverse. You need to know the original series to appreciate that this is a different iteration where things are happening differently and the implications of those deviations. And just like FFVII:R, there's purposeful manipulation driving each world. The payoff for the Rebuild movies is finally seeing a world in which Shinji actually overcomes his trauma vs. End of Evangelion. It admittedly takes a while to get there though.

I feel the same way when people complain about Amuro in the original Gundam. Like dawg he's a child soldier... also he was right almost every time he threw a fit?

I love Simon being the exact opposite on Gurren Lagan, but that's only worked because the whole premise of that series was him living up to Kamina and surpassing that unrealistically inspirational goalpost.
