My boss got married recently and I got him and his wife a gift certificate for $50 at a local golf course. They both play together so I figured it'd go towards a green fee.

Cash is never a bad way to go either. My wife and I had a large amount of cash to go towards items that weren't purchased off our registry.

Also a flesh light for him and a vibrator for her are obvious choices too.

    This.

Also, Did they register anywhere? My buddy got married and he put this $400 grill on his registry. So a bunch of us chipped in for it, ended up getting him the grill, a utensil set, and had $100 left over which he used to throw a party and cook us all burgers.

At the end of the day, if you don't know, and they aren't registered, then get them cash.

Yeah that's along what I was thinking. I mean he's my best friend since kindergarden so he's more family than friend. So I was thinking higher end even if it stretched what I could afford because I didn't want to come off as cheap which is my only gripe against giving cash. Like people who give 10 bucks in cash but will buy you a 50 dollar sweater you'll never wear. I mean I understand it comes down to obviously what you can afford just wondering what most people decide was appropriate.

Why don't you call and ask if there's something they really want or need? If you're that close, you should be able to ask this kind of question of them.

It's not like you have to surprise them with a gift. Getting them something that they want is better than something they'll end up returning, and if there's nothing they want, give them cash.

I think calling and asking them would be nice. It would save a lot of trouble. Also, you could ask them if they are registered anywhere, but that's fairly old fashioned now.

I think a nice big gift card for a grocery store they frequent would be really nice, a surprise, and practical all rolled into one.

One of the best gifts me and the wife got (besides our rotisserie), was a $500 bed bath and beyond gift card.

You know, I never even considered that and I should have really. That makes a lot of sense. I guess I sort of figured it's wrong or maybe awkward is a better word, to ask straight up. But that actually might be the way to go, thanks.

When giving money I was always told the cost of your meal then plus something. The general meals are around $100, so for friends/close family I give $400-$500, and for distant family and being a guest usually $250 or $300.

Offer them the advice that if they split before the wedding they're going to save a ton of money and heart ache if they do get married and then inevitably split.

Like everyone said, give money. When my wife and I got married 4 yrs ago we made a little over 17k, the few presents we got were shit, so yeah. Money.

thanks for all the input everyone.

unfortunately due to health reasons my cousin has had to cancel the wedding, but I'll bear your ideas in mind for when they get it rescheduled.
