You'll notice that this sort of behaviour is pretty damn common with people. When some state of affairs is taken for granted and then one day the area is opened up to new people, people of different ages, colours, and genders, the reaction of the those who were there before is composed of the following:
A sense of having one's space invaded
A sense that things have become unfair, even though things were unbalanced before
A sense that one is being persecuted or wrongfully harmed
