"You cannot play this game at current video output setting" PS3 Error

Well I downloaded EU PSN version of Final Fantasy 6 bought a 25 pound card for 40 dollars and it is giving me this error message. Lots of things I read that PAL games have issues oh NTSC TVs or something. I was wondering if there was a quick fix or am I shit out of luck and out 40 dollars?

On your TV you should be able to switch between PAL/NTSC. Your PS3 should adjust to that automatically.

EDIT: This is the first time in a long while I've heard of games suffering from PAL/NTSC errors. NTSC is 60hz and PAL is 50hz. Most average+ TVs should support both modes, in the UK, but the cheap TVs (i.e. some 20inch square no special features one) in the UK would only support PAL.

The only thing close that I found on my TV model LG 32LH20-UA was that in the service mode there was a mode to switch to NTSC, 2 sys, 3 sys and 4 sys wasn't much else I found (although I didn't pry around too long messing with settings in fear of bricking my TV). I was wondering if I would have had better luck finding responses in the gaming discussions because I didn't think I'd be the first American to DL a PS1 game via PSN for my PS3 <_<.

You have a pal game and a pal tv and a pal ps3? If it's an NTSC TV in the US I don't know of many that can display 50hz

The PS3 I don't think they have a region lock on them? But it has been purchased in North America.

I've heard of people playing games from the EU PSN and as an American I went and created an EU PSN account in hopes of playing Final Fantasy VI as it has not been released for the NA PSN. I've heard of people doing something similar but it may be because this is a PS1 game and not a 720P game that I've come across this issue but I may be mistaken.

i don't think the game region should matter as long as the console doesn't care, only that the system and your tv match, which they do so I don't think it's a problem with region. To what are your display settings set on the ps3? Do you have 720p checked as a usable display option?

This is correct and the problem. UK TV's have supported PAL and NTSC for a while now, so they can buy US ps1 games just fine. It's rare for an American TV to support PAL (maybe 600hz plasma's can as it is divisible in to 50) it's just a very specific problem with older games as they were pretty much built around the refresh rate.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but I recall that some games actually relied on the hz rate to dictate in game values like world time etc. I remember when there were certain problems with emulation because the game would be played above the refresh rate it was programed to operate at and the game would then in turn speed up and play like it was in fast forward. So yeah, PAL/NTSC isn't a problem for modern games and consoles so you don't hear about it much these days but for older games like those you'll need to take it in to consideration.

But you can still use the card on PSN games and PS3 games on the UK store so don't let it go to waste. (There are some EU exclusive PSN games after all.)
