Like the title says, all the drivers etc have been installed properly without trouble, controller just won't turn on and work with the pc at all. Are the 360s controllers not compatible with PCs or something like that?

Is it the wired version? only those work iirc
O.. wireless too if you get the adapter.
Connect An XBOX 360 Controller For Windows To A PC
64 Bit 7 Ultimate, the Black one.
And yeah, using it connected via USB charger, thanks.
nvm
Buy a wired one. The wireless one has trouble with various games and yeah, you're going to need to buy the adapter if you do want to use it on your PC.
Hey Just thought I might chime in since I use a 360 controller myself.
First and foremost to dispel any future confusion, the Xbox 360 Play and Charge kit / cable does not transmit data, only power. So if you wanted a wired solution you will need a wireless controller, if you wanted to still use your wireless controller on the PC you would need to purchase a wireless receiver, and let me be the first to tell you that the one microsoft bundles with a wireless controller for use on a PC is absolute SHIT.
I use one I purchased from Dealextreme
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.33226
It works great for charging the controller at the end of a long day of gaming, and as for drivers the ones that came with it didn't play nice with Windows 7 so I used drivers from Masahiko Morii http://www.katch.ne.jp/~morii/index.html (Google can translate this for you) just be sure to get the driver for your OS and architecture and you should be rocking out in no time...
Best of luck to you!
P.S. This does have a driver that will install the play and charge, I haven't the foggiest of what it actually DOES (perhaps better power management/charging?) but it does NOT allow the play and charge cable to change a wireless controller into a wired one.
My MS wireless receiver has worked perfectly thus far. Wondering what problems people have actually had with it.
Yeah it's ugly but it has a good LOL with it (The three letters above the LEDs are OMG), that and it's functional.. can't argue with that
I might have had to modify the driver to correct the device ID, but that was simple enough I think it was incremented by 1. You can send me a PM and I can help get it going if you have issues.
as far as issues people have been having with the stock receiver, they would unplug it from one pc and plug it into another and it would instantly die
It's funny you should mention this. I just fixed this issue before after a reformat.
It's pretty easy. Go through device manager. It will show the unrecognized device. Right click and go to properties. I believe you can manually select which device it is. Show all the possible devices. Should be under game controllers, and microsoft. Choose the Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. There's a definite method to it, and I should have written it down, but I didn't. Definitely did it in the method described and it works np now
Bump.
Anyone with an answer to this? My steam summer sale shopping splurge has ended but now I have a ton of games that are best experienced with a controller, and since I don't own a bluetooth dongle my only other options are my two wireless 360 controllers. Seems my only options are the official microsoft receiver or the one at dealextreme. Why is the MS one so bad?
To expand on the response above, there were at least some of them that had a problem with pulling too much power and blowing an internal fuse. Fix documented here.
Whether this is actually a problem still, hard to say. AFAIK, MS doesn't package the adapter for individual sale anymore, so you're either looking at brown-box sales of ones pulled from bundles, or Chinese knock-offs. Your other option is to buy a wired 360 controller, which may not be all that much expensive than the wireless receiver.
Personally though, I was given one in a brown box last Christmas and have been using it since. There's also the simple fact that it wouldn't take a large percent of them failing to get a decent number of complaints on the internet, as with anything.
I don't really want a 3rd XBox 360 controller, let alone a wired one. I'll just pick up the receiver.
Could also try the Motioninjoy drivers from http://www.motioninjoy.com/ I got them to work with my PS3 controller for racing games and they've been great so far. There's a guide on the site's wiki for using XBox 360 controllers as well.
