GW2's system is going to piss a lot of people off that like the holy trinity. At the same time, people should understand going in that there isn't one. It's more about the group working together than 1 guy tanking, 1 guy healing, and a bunch of dps. It's also not like a jack of all trades type system either, it's about equipping the correct skills to your limited bar in conjunction to the encounter and your group. I prefer this system over say EQ2's where you have like 80 skills on your bar.

Yes, a reason why i liked ffxi and the way it looked over wow, was how simple the UI seemed. I never really liked having 50 buttons on the screen.

You say this, and yet you act like you didn't write any SpellCast macros, or use Windower to extend the in-game macro system to 16 lines of gear switching. Don't need 50 buttons when one button does over a dozen things, I guess.

Don't need a button for each of your 50 abilities/spells when 45 of them are out-dated and/or useless.

The current topic of discussion was XI's seemingly simple user interface not having "50 buttons on the screen" like World of Warcraft.

So you were saying that in WoW there was 5 useful abilities and 45 useless? I am confused because I considered all the possible things you could be talking about and couldnt make any sense of it.

Again... I was talking about the eleventh installment of the Final Fantasy franchise.

I am assuming you can understand that there are a lot of spells and abilities in the game that become completely out-dated (spell tiers) or are simply useless from the get-go (lots of weaponskills).

HENCE... XI's user interface wasn't cluttered because you never needed buttons to immediately access all your possible actions.

    hint: It was sarcasm.

Fair enough. I was thinking of jobs like thf early on with a handful of abilities. But ultimately it seems I agree with you then!

This is getting a bit off topic now... I don't know a whole lot about WoW, but did abilities get out-dated or did they grow in potency with your character? I assumed the latter.

Twas sarcasm, bud. There's like 3 good moves and spells for each class, mostly consisting of Utsusemi and the occasional stun.

Since Rift is supposedly a WoW clone, i will tell you about Rift. In Rift as you level up, and gain points, you may use these points to enhance skills, but also you may enhance the skills you already know by buying upgrades at a trainer. If WoW has this, then yea.

Neither. Blizzard redesigns everything every expansions. Certain abilities dissapears, other are added or merged, but thing rarely stay useless for too long.

For the most parts, they try to give a purpose to every abilities, and they are doing a much better job at this then before. There will always be a few utilities or fun tools that have next to no practical use (ie: an ability that allow you to see far away), but you can generally count on a large set of abilities that have their uses.

On prot paladin, there is around 40 icons on my bars. Around 25 are used regularly, and the rest, while being less useless still come handy at time. There is maybe 3-4 abilities that I won't use (usually more useful on another spec).

Its never really too overwhelming because so many abilities are reactionary and whatnot, meaning that they're not always immediately available for use. As a tank, you might see a solid fifth of your abilities (and perhaps half of your main rotation abilities) only being activated once you block/dodge/parry an attack. I like it because it keeps combat nice and high-paced, and its fun to have 3 abilities pop up on a block that I get to pick from, depending on the situation that I'm in. Do I want to do lots of damage on a counter, do I want to do little damage yet give myself a massive buff, or do I want to perhaps increase my change to block even more hits while doing little damage?

There's a lot of choice, and that fly-by-wire choice (even for those who whittle everything down to a single rotation) is a lot of fun in the long run.

As much as I defend and appreciate GW2, the way they glorify themselves because of dropping the holy trinity is a mistake.
I've met a lot of players that *want* to be the healer, or the tank. Such roles give you specific purposes and inportance, like keeping others alive or head straight for the big boss as sustain all its hits.
Dumping all this so that people don't need to wait for party doesnt really get me, and it risks to turn the battle flow into 5 people playing their own game in the same instanced room.

Also, I understand this is BG and there's a hueg attitute toward "this class it's the only class", but in all my years of FF11 I met a lot of great players who enjoyed all endgame content while on a "gimp" job and didnt ever see anything bad about that. Sure to top charts there was a certain job selection, but first you didnt need that full time and secondly you'd always grind the next bandwagon job.

Personally I could care less if there is 1 primary class that tops them all. If you wanna do the numbers level the damn class. If you wanna play the job you find fun, play that class. There will always be a number one class over all classes, it just depends on the patch.

Class wise they just need to make them unique from one another. I'd rather pass on balancing for the time being long as they make new content.

20-50 content is what they should be working on making better right now. 1 - 20 goes fast enough people will see "Hey there is a light at the end of this tunnel", that light gets very very dim 20-50 right now.

Not to mention, the whole class balance affair has turned to a real nightmare for WoW designers.
The more they try to stick to "bring player not class", the more they're forced to make all classes basically the same. I myself enjoyed how FF11 jobs turned out much more.

    Actual question on topic.

Are those locations where you enter the instances somewhere close and easy to get to? Or are they doing the old school FFXI thing of must be on 30 minutes before the event just to get to where the event is?
