The lack of a level cap is a serious flaw in my book.
You can hoarde all the cool r30 items for your other classes easily as long as you have one r50 class. I don't think that's exactly a good thing.
Somebody got trolled, hook, line, sinker, I knew it was coming the moment someone posted how other games raids are > FF's.
Yes FFonlyfanboi's are the worst.
Doesn't make it any less true. I remember when I went to go play Aion. It opened my eyes to what a modern mmo is supposed to be like. The standard was raised significantly and I could never go back to XI.
Those that "enjoy" XI are also in a minority, a tiny one. And many probably haven't really given anything else as good a chance as they gave XI. True they could dislike the art or gameplay style but the existence of certain game design is, I think, the primary allusion here.
MMOs don't have to clone WoW, but there are certain working concepts all mmos should have stock. A good guild system for example, with perhaps a bank area. How about multiple modes of transportation? I compare this to FPS games having bullets, a cross-hair, and headshots. They all have them and if you neglect that, your game flops. XI-onries seem to have much higher tolerance for these exclusions.
^this
And games like Rift may well have lots more mobs... but that's because all a designer/modeller/animator has to do is fart and follow through a little bit to add another one to the list. For an MMO, FFXIV looks gorgeous and that's why it takes longer (and/or more resources) to make game assets. All the devs need to do is add some more variety to areas/mobs etc to breath a bit more life into the world and it will become the benchmark for a long time.
When I tried Rift I honestly couldn't believe how 'last gen' it looked/felt after what I'd been told - I kept trying to find setup options to enable 'HQ mode' only to find that this was it... I'd rather play Baldur's Gate on the PS2
EDIT: I'm not defending FFXI/XIV's various other deficiencies, but when game assets look crap its hard to feel 'immersed'
I'm one of those people who couldn't care less about how it looks if it plays well. You can't have one or the other; you need a balance of both.
Graphics doesn't keep anyone playing this game as far as I'm concerned.
What other mmos have you played besides rift kuya
What have YOU played besides XI?
I completely agree with this. My first MMO was FFXI, and I started on PS2. I didnt even have a computer back then (that was any good, lol) and after I did I moved to playing it on PC. I couldnt imagine MMOs being much different than XI at the time and never paid much attention to them, and the only reason I played XI is because I own and played every Final Fantasy I could get my hands on. I played XI for almost 6 years and even though I wanted to quit, I could never do it. The announcement of XIV was the only thing that got me to quit XI, and when I did go to XIV, I was devastated with what I found. I put all my eggs into XIV, expecting it to be XI with all the things fixed that made XI so difficult. We all know that didnt happen. Since I quit that "game" I have tried Rift and EVE and I was blown away with how good interfaces could be, and how user friendly things could be. Looking back now it amazes me how behind the curve SE was with customer service, but over the years I thought all MMOs were like that. Now that I have played a few other MMOs, it shows me what a colossal failure XIV was, aside from the graphics, which I have to admit are beautiful. As I play Rift I think back to XI and wonder why there were never guild banks, on screen map, action bars, stuff that are MMO standards. Yes I can understand wanting not to clutter up the screen, but dont sacrifice funcionality for it. I still havent found a game that pulled me in like XI did, however, as I continue to believe that it had one of the best attempts at making you care about the lore. That being said, I dont care/know much about the story in Rift.
XIV will never be any of this, unfortunately, and even if it does, nobody (or not many) will go back to play it.
I was just about to post about that facepalm thread. The OP wrote in font size 48 about how he demands level caps.lol people on the forums complaining about the Lv25 dungeon not having a level cap because they don't have Lv30s and are going through plow through the content..
It's like all the content in the game is meant for people at end game. Let's balance a Lv25 dungeon with Lv50s in mind. That should work out well.
Edit:
Thread moving faster than I thought.
Oh, what have I not played.
The 50-60 level tutorials that never change do get tiring after the "new and shiny" wears off, though. I have a low tolerance for them.
Either way, you're all still here. It's telling.
"Only until X comes out", of course.
The hyperbole can be rather effective, though.I was just about to post about that facepalm thread. The OP wrote in font size 48 about how he demands level caps.
Stick to discussing dungeons and go hate on FFXI elsewhere. People like different things and your opinion isn't in any way more important than others.
Once you realize FFXI is one of the most succeful MMOs in history unlike Rift we can have a decent discussion.
And yes, I have tried tons of MMOs. Maybe too many. They all sucked in comparison according to my taste and I've seen a lot of people quit WoW to crawl back in FFXI. Go figure huh?
People tend to bring up number of subs when comparing wow to ffxi, and ffxi defenders get mad and make the claim that popularity and number of people don't matter, but then are more than happy you use phrases like this as it suits them.
I for one would like to see what would be in the ff14 forum if all the flaming and white knighting debates were cut, because even the threads attempting to be productive tend to fall apart.
Why are Hyan and Mioko still so strongly marked as white knights when they aren't really that white knightish compared to people like Alkar that just post angry defensive crap?
Your standard for a game to draw you away from FFXI is Aion? LOL
I am not saying you can't like other games, you can like anything you want, but to act like you have discovered the secret to MMO's because new MMO's have new stuff that old MMO's don't have, is retarded.
Some people love Marmite Sandwiches, I find that stuff disgusting personally, but that doesn't make loving Marmite Sandwiches wrong.
It is truly ironic that you are calling other people fanboys. You sound like Steve Jobs. "Your [MMO] needs are wrong!"
Just for the record on why people are quitting WoW, way too long of a wait between content patches. The model of the game has grown pretty stale, cataclysm failed to deliver on a ton of stuff @ the end game level.
Lets not get into this - I think Aikar was saying that XI has been around a long time. Rift will be dead in 2 years or so is my guess.
Anyway, back to thread... I know SE is being a lot better at giving out info than they used to, but a blog or something would be great. Snippets of info like this one on dungeons is borderline useless and only annoys people when its sandwiched between days/weeks of relative silence. A junior dev tasked with writing a blog would be great (I wonder if translation/cost is stopping them doing this). If they intend to push out as many changes as they had in that table Yoshi updated a few weeks back, these dungeons won't have to keep people busy for too long...
