Putting IDE hardrives in modern computer

I'm trying to put two IDE hard drives in a modern computer and this is my first time working with multiple IDE hard drives ( I had no idea about this slave and master drive business). I put them both in slave and plugged them in the IDE slot and neither are being recognized. I was wondering if I should put both of them in CS instead or one Slave and One master ( although the master isn't my main hard drive where the OS boots up from).

To sum up pretty much wondering how I should put the pins as putting them both in slave did not get recognized at all.(I have none set to master but I have a "modern" hard drive in there now)

edit: they are getting power as they are getting warm.

I'm not sure since I have only put one in my new rig temporarily, but I would believe CS would give you least amount of trouble, but you would probably want to designate a master and slave otherwise, then set your SATA drive as the boot drive in the BIOS.

You need to have Master and Slave set. Each IDE channel only supports two devices, one has to be Master, the other Slave. Cable Select just makes it easier as it automatically makes the device at the end of the cable Master, and the one in the middle Slave. It doesn't change which can be booted from, though the Master device does tend to show up first.

The typical, and easier thing to do is just put them on Cable Select unless you have a problem.

There's a lot of newer IDE drives that will automatically select Cable Select if it has no pin in it, too.

I tried to put it in slave master, and CS on both still were not recognize I think we are just going to get IDE to SATA converters.
