Driving into Brooklyn

Okay pretty easy question here.

I live in NY, and go to the city from time to time. I don't go as often as I like, but whatever. I'll usually hop on either the Metro North to GCC or depending on where I'm going, the 2 train down to Brooklyn.

Next Friday there is an art gallery event I want to go to. Specifically at South 1st Street (between Roebling and Havemeyer) Directions are easy. I have my smartphone + google maps. That takes care of getting there. I'd take the train normally, but I have art I'll be carrying along with a portfolio, so it's not a realistic option to be lugging it all around and risk damaging it.

Having never driven to Brooklyn, I'm wondering what to expect on the drive down. Obviously the further you go into the city the more aggressive people become. I'm more concerned about traffic though. The event is at 7 PM, and I get out of work at 4. I've heard from a few friends if I left that late (at 4) to not expect to get there until 8 or later. Just trying to gauge how much time I should compensate for myself. I'll probably take it slower than normal as I do when I've not driven there before. BQE is a pain in the ass from what I hear. Guessing the parking is also a bitch and am gonna have to find street parking. Doesn't seem to be any lots near there.

Oh. And my date for that night is worry about getting mugged cause it's Brooklyn. I told her not to worry, statistically the odds are way in your favor, and everyone has the same chance of getting mugged. She is just overworrying. I hate to sound like I'm overworrying, I just want to give myself enough time to get there, really.

How long does it normally take you to drive from where you to to let's say Manhattan etc. Since it sounds like you're commuting from upstate if people are projecting a 4 hour drive. I don't drive often, but on a friday around that time you'll probably experience some traffic but I imagine it'll all be outgoing due to commuters getting off work at varying times.

I live sorta close to the area you described, I can't remember if the Jewish neighborhood goes that far or if the spanish neighborhood starts there, but either way it's not that bad from what I remember. When you get down to South 3rd near Division and shit that's when it starts getting really ghetto with guys camped out on the stoops and stuff. Either way anyone anywhere has a chance to get mugged, unless she does something stupid like walk down a dark alley or something you aren't anymore at risk than anyone else.

It shouldnt take you two hours to drive to BK.

I used to play hockey at Murrays in Yonkers and it took me at longest 45 minutes to get there with traffic from Queens.

I don't go to brooklyn ever. Basically you're not gonna find parking though pretty much anywhere. Same as Manhattan really, the streets are even more narrow though and restrictions are a pain. Basically if it's a nice part of brooklyn, and you're gonna be driving there, so long as you park close I wouldn't worry about getting mugged or something ridiculous like that. What you could also do is ride to grand central/penn station on the train, and take a brooklyn bound train. It might be faster considering traffic/time of day which is something you have to check. The MTA NYC site could help you pick a train and then you can actually google map the directions and see how it compares to your drive. TBH I wouldn't drive unless it's at night, you might end up with a lot of traffic on the Saw Mill/Hutch even before you get to the bridges.

Obviously if you're uncomfortable carrying stuff around and aren't comfortable, like really comfortable, to take a pretty long subway ride, driving is what you should do. Just be warned that with the traffic you'll need to leave well ahead and just have to deal with the traffic. You also in that case should just plan to park in a lot, since I assume you're taking your new car. I wouldn't park in the street with a new car unless I knew the area really well. Trade offs man. It's like when I started driving to night classes at john jay in manhattan, the train ride at night was ok, but waiting an hour+ at ghetto ass westchester square wasn't working for me. So I drove, left 2 hours early to find parking and waiting in the car until 6pm and had to run to class lol.

Parking is probably gonna suck if there's an event in that area that day, that is true. I don't expect your car to be the only nice one in the area honestly so don't worry about that.

Really the nice parts of brooklyn aren't even that violent anymore. A lot of the borough has been upscaled by people with money pushing the ghetto people out and renovating the old buildings. I don't know the area you're going to by heart, but streetview it in google and check it out lol.

Oh I'm sure I will be Rich. Nobody ever bothers me. I'm 6'3, 220, with a completely shaved head. If anything, people look to get away from me more than I look to get away from them. Someone will key it just because, some douche on a bike will ride too close and hit your mirror. Those are just some things to start. Seriously unless you're parking in front of a well lit, and busy building you should expect no less. People are assholes, especially when fighting for parking.

Also, clearly you've never tried getting into the city using the hutch at rush hour, or any of the bridges. It used to take me 2 hours to get from the Bronx, to 59th street and that's avoiding the bridge routes. That shit is madness.

People can bump or key your shit in the best neighborhoods, you act like rich people aren't assholes or bad drivers. That's irrelevant. I live in Marcy Projects, and shit isn't even that bad. While I choose not to, I can willingly go out at night and not really have any extra fears. You can get jumped or killed in the middle of the night or while waiting for a train at Grand Central or while standing at a corner in the suburbs cause someone is drinking and driving, Brooklyn really isn't the warzone it got the reputation for in the 90's anymore.
