I have this stutter as well... Uninstalled QoS and tried disabling all USB devices and no change. I do play with a controller but with or without it there is no difference.

What did help a bit was disabling Intel Speedstep in the BIOS... so that the CPU runs at full speed at all times instead of underclocking when idle. This has a noticeable boost, but if you look close enough you can still see the stutter, although its by far not as annoying now.

Still, this isn't a solution and I haven't been able to find a sure-fire way yet. Googled and tried other things like port forwarding too... /sigh Why can't this game behave nicely for once after 5 systems since I started playing it -.-

I reinstalled FFXI on windows 7 32bit and oddly have no issues but when i ran it on Vista and if you have a multi-core processor, setting affinity to only use 1 core does help a lot.

If you recently played with your graphics card settings, try disabling Shadows and Weather in FFXI, if that fixes your lag then you need to disable Morphological Filtering and under "OpenGL Settings" disable Triple Buffering, FFXI doesn't like either of these things. If its 100% sure not a graphics problem, disregard my post...

EDIT: And also when I installed LogMeIn Hamachi and some other "Connect through LAN via the internet" program it creates this problem also. I had used it to play LAN games over the internet with friends, when I logged back into FFXI it was like that, and I just uninstalled it and it was back to new.

I used to have this problem. I have a router and for a long time I thought it was causing the problem. I reinstalled the router software but it didn't help. Then like other people here said I thought it mite be the NIC. I had looked at some settings and under, "Network Connections" it was showing I had a Internet Gateway which I didn't think was necessary sense this computer is connected directly to it and I don't share the internet with anyone.

So I reinstalled the NIC drivers and also went to "Add/Remove programs" > "Add/Remove Windows components" and removed "Networking services" then put it back. Game runs smoothly now.

Also sense I didn't see anyone mention it. Disable your antivirus from actively scanning the game. Most antivirus nowdays will continuously check any program running for suspicious activity.
