    Wireless issues

I have Verizon Fios wireless at 25 over 25. Right now though and at least 5-10 times a day my connection speed drops to .8-2 over 2 - 10mbps.

I bought a ranged extender for the router, the router is placed in a central location but it's a floor and a half below me. I can't move the router any further up because Verizon felt it best to install the fucking cables and modem box in the basement on the opposite side of the house before I started living here (living with fiances parents).

I was using the Netgear N adapater and that was dropping my signal constantly, so I tried using my fiances PCI Engenius card, but that is having no luck either in finding a decent connection for more then 30minutes before it all goes to shit.

    Fiance just got this:

and her connection seems to be fine, I figured the Netgear Adapter would suffice for me, and I bought it refurbished from newegg so I can't return it for money back or to get another adapter.

Should I try getting a new adapter? Verizon won't do a damn thing for us, they keep telling me it's fine and that they don't guarantee wireless connection speed, and yeah I know it can deprecate over distance, but going from 25 down to a fraction over only about 15 feet seems pretty damn shitty. They won't send out a service tech either.

Do they offer a wired only modem option?

If they do, you can get that, and buy your own router.

Also, if this is happening sporadically, it could be related to certain radio waves in your area.

    Planes, etc

(that's potentially a very stupid statement, please spare me as I don't know much about wireless signals being interfered with by such things, it's only an uninformed theory)

sounds like it's likely an issue with the poor placement in the house. It's beyond me why any engineer would cable a router up in a basement unless it was absolutely the only option.

What kind of house is it? If it's an older brick house it's more likely to have materials that would block/interrupt signal strength.

in short: get it out the basement. was stupid of them to put it there anyway.

Nah it's a newer house, the only reason I could think that he would put the modem where it is, is there's a side of the house on an incline on that side with the yard, so he could just drill right there, run wires and cables and be lazy. I would go through the hassle of moving all this shit out of the basement but me and my fiance are moving in there within a few months so I guess my choice is to just leg it out with this shit connection. I'm buying a new adapter because this Netgear is a piece of shit in my opinion. I've tried changing the channel for the router, it's on channel 11 now, I might try channel 6 or so and see how it works.

It's sad that I had better wireless signals and connections with Time Warner up in New York through the same sort of set up (modem in basement).

I used to have this problem, and I got myself one of these:

It looks ridiculous cause it's pretty big compared to normal router antennas, but with it and boosting the power of the wireless signal (with tomato firmware) to 100, it really helped.
