Once that baby is born, the two people are linked forever. It was pretty frustrating for me given I could already see if the kid was born that things would fall out quick once the reality set in that babies aren't anything like they appear to be on TV.
Id also ask if they're ready to change diapers, buy diapers, buy food, clothes, toys, read books with this kid, pick him/her up from school, sink money into further education and hold down full time jobs. If they're in school, ask if they're willing to sacrifice their education or employment opportunities for the incoming child.
Drilling home that babies aren't cheap usually puts things into perspective, especially if you're working a min wage shitfest where you barely get paid enough to take care of yourself.
Id focus on dropping statistics and tailoring your argument towards the type of person your roommate is. Press him on what exactly he'll do to make it work and drill home that you can't halfass kids if you really care about them. If that means taking him to the store and doing a tally on costs for simple shit like infant formula and diapers, do it.
If you're close to them then perhaps your argument might be able to pierce the attitude that it'll be 'alright'.
Just don't be surprised if you have to sit back and watch them struggle because they didn't listen to you. Infact, prepare yourself for it.
