So DVD's and streaming at lowest level would be something like 16 bucks a month, one disc at a time...
On FIOS, HBO and Cinemax package is 22 a month, which is something like 10 to 12 channels. Plus you get on Demand content from both channels (including the dry-humping softcore porn)
Not to mention HBO GO is now online streaming content, meaning you can still Watch Game of Thrones on your PC's... short of Showtimes orginial content (AKA: Spartacus), what is the point to having Netflix anymore?

22/mo on top of a pre-existing cable package which is probably like $80. I don't even have cable (I don't watch TV), but I do like to stream and watch DVDs. I mean if you put it that way yeah I would rather pay $16 vs $102.

I'm surprised with everyone wanting to jump off Netflix, no one has mentioned public libraries as their alternative but have said Redbox instead.

Haven't read the whole thread, but just wanted to point out that Netflix's costs are going to skyrocket in the near future as many of their contracts with major content providers come up for renewal. The providers didn't realize how much money the instant stuff would going to make when they first licensed content to Netflix, and gave them a great deal. Jig is up, it seems.

I believe August 21 is the cancel netflix day because everyone is getting annoyed with their shit. The new UI is terrible you cant even separate it by genres and sub genres anymore on the ps3 -_-. Now with the payment option change their service is getting rather annoying.

Now would be a good time to start reading threads before posting in them, this has been mentioned several times already.

Hm. I'll probably cancel my Netflix if they keep this shit up. Tired of having streaming-only and not even being able to stream any George Romero movies (or new releases).

Why would anyone want to fucking use Netflix when half the good shit can't even be streamed?

Greedy = Jump ship = Ploy to get customers back fail = Closed shop

The same shit happened to Blockbuster and now look at them - they actually tout that they have same-day release streaming.

Also, if you actually happen to have a blockbuster that isn't out of business (no idea where though lol) it includes 5 exchanges from there (basically 5 free rentals at an in-store). One of my old roommates had blockbuster and it didn't seem like they were any slower or faster about getting dvds to you. So really the only difference is the games and the price.

    https://www.blockbuster.com/signup/m/plan

    basically netflix streaming + 1 DVD disc = 16$ a month

blockbuster streaming + 1 disc including DVDs and games = 12$ a month

(not sure on rates for BB on bluray btw)

Come to think of it, this netflix change may be the best thing that ever happened to blockbuster. (I doubt blockbuster would try to match it considering netflix is probably raping them atm on subscriptions, so this could be a great way to put them on an even level). And the more I think on it, if you really are pissed about netflix doing this, switch to blockbuster for now. Neither netflix or blockbuster require a minimum month/year subscription, and that would give netflix the incentive to change their shit up.

[edit] hubby pointed out to me, one major downfall to BB is there is no current stream support on game consoles, so that's something to think about if wanting to switch. But again, considering there's no minimum requirement, if you're willing, I'd still suggest switching because if they get an influx of subscribers and they see that's what their customers want, it may get support later on. And again the idea is to not support netflix's price hike.

[edit edit] lol, doing more poking around, BB may suck as an alternative. I guess their subscription doesn't include streaming as that's a separate thing, and they still charge like $4 per item to stream (wtf blockbuster). So I guess it's only worth it if you want to do DVD onry, especially if you actually have an open BB near you or you want to drop a gamefly subscription. I did find out that they don't charge extra for blu-ray, though.
Kasandra, avoid Blockbuster's DVD by mail service at all costs. For a while I tested out their service last year to see if I liked it better than Netflix. I was irritated by Netflix's delay for some new releases and Blockbuster seemed like a good alternative.

I signed up for their free trial month. You have to of course give out your CC info when you register, but that was to be expected (They have to protect their property right?). I sent off for my first few DVDs, hoping they would have around the same shipping times for Netflix. Five days later, they showed up. I was a bit annoyed as it usually takes Netflix one day to get things here, but I assumed it was just due to new account etc.

Watched those flicks, and threw them back in the mail. Day after day, I kept checking to see if they were received by Blockbuster. Six days later, they showed up and my next set of movies was sent out. Again, five days later, they showed up. Irritated, I called Blockbuster and asked them where the closest distribution hub was located. I was told that they had one in my state. This was indeed very odd, since Netflix too had a hub in my state, yet the times were radically different.

Sent off that batch, four days later they get them back all except for one. I think to myself, okay maybe this one is just lagging behind the others. Several more days pass, and nothing. The next set of DVDs is already on it's way minus one selection as that slot is taken up by the one lost in the mail. I call and tell them I did send it in, same as the others and I just wanted them to be aware I didn't keep it. The lady was very polite and said it happens all the time, no worries and they would go ahead and send out the one disc that was held up.

That batched showed up, and now it was getting close to the end of my one month free trial. After consideration, I figured I would just hold off and cancel. I call, they again were very polite with promises of "No worries, it's taken care of; sorry to see you go yadda yadda."

A week later, I get some new DVDs in the mail. I call up Blockbuster and ask what happened. Apparently, it's my fault because if you cancel their service and still have things in your list to be sent, it trumps the cancellation. Extremely annoyed, I tell them I wish to cancel the service and delete everything from the list. I am told there is nothing they can do about the new monthly charge, but assure me it's not going to happen again. I mail off the DVDs back to them thinking it's case closed, end of story, lesson learned.

Sadly, it wasn't so easy as two weeks later I get a single DVD in the mail. It's a copy of the DVD that they either lost or never got back in the mail. Dumbfounded as to why I was sent it again, I called them up. Apparently it was an error and the system sent it out after they located the missing one thinking some how that I never watched it even though I sent it back. After a few thoughts of no wonder they are having such trouble and hoping they go bankrupt entirely, they tell me to take it back to my last remaining Blockbuster store. I tell the lady it's way out of the way and I have no intentions of doing that, she tells me it's required to make sure they get it since my account is canceled.

Fine, I drive 45 minutes away, give it to the person at the counter who gave me a nod, took the DVD and turned away. I said, not so fast I need some kind of proof that I dropped this thing off. They said they didn't have anything like that and it was just going to be scanned in and I should have "no worries". I swear I should have listened to that little voice that tells you you are going to regret it, but I said "Ok. You better" and left.

One month later, I was paying my bills and I noticed a charge to my account for $80.00 to Blockbuster. Guess what? They charged my card for both the DVD they said was lost but then found, and then the second replacement DVD that they had me take to a physical store. This time, they were not nice at all. They had my CC info still on file and said they had every right to charge me full price for both copies of the same title, as well as one extra month of fees.

I went round and round with them for days playing phone tag, and waiting for call backs from upper level departments. I eventually gave up after looking online for similar complaints only to find out I was not alone in what they had done. Apparently it's their M.O. on how they milk customers. Some of the shady things they do are:

During a free trial will say they mail your title on Monday, only to really mail it out on Thursday or Friday. By doing this they cut down on the actual number of titles you can view during the free trial.

During a free trial will say they never received a title when they in fact do, then they report getting several days later. Again, the same as above this is to minimize the number of titles you can get from them.

Not credit you for turning in movies to actual locations.

Not cancel your membership when asked.

Charge you for anything they feel like lying about since they took down your CC.

Meh, sorry for the rant it just still pisses me off to this day. Just save yourself the trouble and say no to Blockbuster.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

My wife and I had a bad experience with Blockbuster as well. Nothing quite that bad but they did keep raising prices and changing plans without telling us so we would expect certain services and they would tell us that they don't do that anymore when we tried to use them. Was really annoying and finally we just dropped blockbuster and moved to netflix. Netflix may suck in the sense that they are raising prices but their service is SO SO SO much better than blockbuster, and faster too.

Is it really that difficult to plug a computer into your tv? Or even if you don't have a laptop, or a computer near your tv, you can just stream from your computer to a ps3/x360.

you people complain too much. There is an endless amount of things to watch on netflix streamed. So they don't have your favorite movie...oh well, they just have thousands of other titles and entire TV shows.

seriously, I bet half of you assholes havent even seen arrested development yet complain that there is nothing good streamed.

honestly I'm shocked that people say there isn't anything on streaming, the only shit I haven't been able to find is Zatoichi, Beat Takeshi stuff and Robot Jox. More documentaries than you could watch in a lifetime, too.
