Haven't the JP been playing MMOs on their cell phones for ages? Before Crisis, Kingdom Hearts Coded, etc... I think?

As for the people who are talking about this being a way for them to move people off the PS2, is this really a viable alternative to the PS2? For me the attraction of the PSVita would be able to play on the go, not for it to replace my console. As much time as I put into sessions of XI, any handheld would be horribly annoying after a few hours of playing let alone if that was my only option to play it on, but I'm not the biggest handheld gamer. Is the market really that big that moving XI from console to handheld would rejuvenate it?

    I don't think it's really about replacement..

Rather this would make sense in terms of both SE and Sony milestones

FFXI, already the first (and probably still the only) cross platform MMORPG around extends to yet another console
This would also make it the first ever fully fledged MMORPG on a portable console
And the first MMORPG on the Vita, one that we know won't even begin to flop.

Putting it on the Vita gives it a valid excuse not to compete with XIV, because it can now offer something that XIV cannot, portability.
I'm pretty sure part of the main intention for SE is so that existing players have a new laptopless option to play on the go... But of course, people can play it to whatever extent they like

As far as feasibility goes.. The touchscreen for keyboard could help a lot for conversing but even if not.. you could totally use the Vita for stuff like checking AH, general crafting, farming and other micro events that make up an MMO.

I really hope this is true
Maybe the upcoming daily reward system might have this kind of playability in mind as well

Waste of development resources & money. You'd think SE would have something better to announce than this garbage.

The idea of a port should guarantee they have decent sized plans for FFXI down the road other than recycling even more zones and adding a pink hue to them.

The way the content is slowly trickling in now wouldn't look good for an MMO on a new platform.

I remember when people said the same thing about the 360 port in 06' :/

I wouldn't be so sure about that.
If it's someone who's joining the game at this point in time, let alone end of the year, there'd still be more than enough existing content to tide them through a long while.. Especially with new updates bringing older events back into relevance. Even now, experienced players can find something to do in game cos there are enough goals to work towards unless theyre hardcore dayjob players. A new player certainly has no grounds to not have stuff to do, so the size and regularity of updates wouldnt matter to them

I don't know what the Vita's battery life but if it's like any other portable device, while running a game and an internet connection it should be approx. ~shit. Additionally, the expectation with portable games is that you can efficiently make use of whatever time you have to play, so even if you've only got 10 minutes you can still have fun. FFXI is loaded with timesinks that are anathema to that entire concept. So what's the target audience here?

As the console has Bluetooth, and no doubt TV Output, I'm willing to bet that it's possible to hook it up to the TV and then use your PS3 controller to play it like a console.

Or did Famitsu make a typo and forgot to add V at the end of FFXI?

Japanese folks who enjoy being tethered to AC outlets.

PS Vita has no tv-out. I can see sixaxis pairing though since PSP-GO does it (albeit via PS3 initially). Granted that would leave you naked for chatting, and perhaps whatever functionality SE would add for front/backtouch.

The 360 port came out with ToAU which I believe is considered one of the best content expansions.
If a Vita port means a new expansion is being planned I'm all for it.

This. Un-solo-friendly MMORPGs and the concept of portable gaming are two completely conflicting ideas. This makes zero sense.

You have to admit, the idea is good, I had no interest in a PSvita to maybe having an interest now.

I'm pretty sure the PSvita has TV-out, considering the PSP does....

No, it does not. During E3, Sony officially confirmed that the Vita will not have a TV Out port.

Furthermore, putting a MMORPG on a portable makes perfect sense. For those of us with busier lives, we may think logging onto FFXI during a lunch break or some such is not feasible; for those obsessed, it will be Heaven on Earth.
