I saw this yesterday. The action scenes were good, special effects were really nice, and the film looked lovely but the acting and dialogue were absolutely dreadful. The only reason to see this in theatre is because it's so nice to look at. If you're not big into how a movie looks, wait until you can download it. I thought the Edgar Rice Borroughs stuff was well done though.

My wife isn't a fan of action-esque movies, but liked Prince of Persia.

Safe to assume she'll like this?

The movie addresses the flaws of the book basically. Like how and why he got to Mars. It falls a little flat on the relationship between Carter and Tarkas but its passable. I enjoyed the movie a lot but, it wasn't as good since I had read the book.

I kept thinking of Abyssea when he was on Mars, how he was more powerful there compared to Earth.

Went to see this with some friends, mostly out of boredom. It was a solid movie. I thought Dejah Thoris was an interesting character, more than John Carter. I thought if they spent a bit more time on their relationship the character development would have been more fluid. Also Willem Dafoe <3

Ok, that was pretty good. It really should be doing better than it is at the box office.

I found out afterwards that Willem Dafoe was in the movie, blew my mind when I saw who he was, lol.

This movie would've been a million times better if it wasn't on Mars. Bugged me the whole time. Should've just had it be on random planet number 15 in the galaxy of who the fuck knows. Doesn't even change the story. Just makes it less rage worthy.

The rest of the movie was good. I would've liked to get some back story on the Therns though. Lynn Collins was a total babe as always.

I knew I heard his voice in the movie!

I saw this the other day. I've heard and seen nothing on it so I went in not sure what to expect and aside from some minor stuff. I rather enjoyed it.

This is a battle John Carter was never going to win. Disney announced late on Monday that it was expecting to book losses of $200 million on the movie, making the space alien flick one of Hollywood’s biggest money-losers ever.

Although expectations that the movie would prove to be huge money-losing venture have long been held by analysts, the Disney’s expected losses are even higher than those previously projected.

The movie, about a Civil War-era soldier who finds himself on planet Mars fighting space aliens, opened to $30 million in its first weekend. But with a production budget of $275 million and marketing expenses totaling $100 million, big losses were to be expected.

In Disney’s second fiscal quarter — ending in March — its studio segment will reportedly post a loss of $80 million to $120 million. During the same quarter a year ago, Disney reported an operating profit of $77 million.

The Associated Press reported that even though Disney had gone on to earn $184 million in ticket sales, these had to be split in half with theater owners.

John Carter is based on a series of books written by the late Edgar Rice Burroughs, including A Princess of Mars and John Carter of Mars. The 3D effects-rich movie was directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton.

Last year, Mars Needs Moms cost Disney $150 million to make but sold only $40 million in tickets, Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. In 2008, Warner Bros. (NYSE:TWX) spent $120 million on Speed Racer, earning only about $94 million. The 1987 movie Ishtar cost Columbia Pictures about $40 million but sold only $14 million in tickets.

Miller Tabak analyst David Joyce told AP that the projected losses will result is a revision of the estimate of Disney’s earnings. “It’s good that Disney’s airing their dirty laundry now,” he said.

Disney expressed confidence in the studio’s forthcoming releases. “As we look forward to the second half of the year, we are excited about the upcoming releases of The Avengers and Brave, which we believe have tremendous potential to drive value for the studio and the rest of the company,” the statement read.

They really wasted that advertising budget. Remember that Disney spent $4million on the airtime for that godawful superbowl ad alone.

Disney has no one but themselves to blame. Their marketing strategy for this movie was horrible.

According to IMDB David Schwimmer was in it too. Made me laugh.

I'm curious for what that $100M marketing budget was wasted. I've seen the trailer 2-3 times on tv and not even a single ad.

I went to see this and really did enjoy it as mindless fun. Its always a risk having a unknown lead male, it can work (Sam Worthington for example) so i don't think that was the issue for its lack of success. One thing that stood out for me is i didn't hear about this film until i saw the trailer in the cinema, i consider myself to be a bit of a movie geek, and read a lot of media related websites and magazines..

Here in the UK anyway, i didn't see hardly anything in terms of advertising outside of the cinema, although i don't watch much TV.. i assume they dumped most of that budget promoting it on high rating TV slots globally or something. It would have been cheaper and much more affective to build hype using the internet, or some crazy publicity stunt early on to get it into national tabloids.

Was a half decent movie, reminded me of a tame Riddick, it is ever so slightly annoying we won't get a sequel, but oh well...

I still say this movie needs to get it's ass off of Mars.
