A large bomb blast has hit near government headquarters in the Norwegian capital Oslo, killing at least one person.

The offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg were damaged extensively - a government spokeswoman said he was safe.

Police said a number of people were injured in the city centre explosion.

No-one has said they were behind the attack, which witnesses said could be heard across the capital.

Television footage from the scene showed rubble and glass from shattered windows in the streets - smoke was rising from some buildings. The wreckage of at least one car was on one street.

All roads into the city centre have been closed, said national broadcaster NRK, and security officials evacuated people from the area, fearing another blast.

"Police can confirm there were deaths and injuries following the explosion in the government quarter this afternoon," police said in a statement.

Oistein Mjarum, head of communications for the Norwegian Red Cross, said his offices were close to the site of the explosion.

"There was a massive explosion which could be heard over the capital Oslo," he told the BBC.

Government spokeswoman Camilla Ryste told the Associated Press Mr Stoltenberg was safe. Initial reports said he was not hurt.

A spokesman for Oslo University hospital said seven people had been taken there for treatment.

"I don't know how seriously wounded they are," he told Reuters.
'Complete chaos'

Mr Mjarum said there were fires burning in the prime minister's 17-storey building.

"This is a very busy area on Friday afternoon and there was a lot of people in the streets, and many people working in these buildings that are now burning," he said.

Eyewitness Ole Tommy Pedersen said he was standing at a bus stop about 100m away from the blast.

"I saw three or four injured people being carried out of the building a few minutes later," Mr Pedersen told AP.

He said there was a cloud of smoke billowing from the lower floors.

An NRK journalist, Ingunn Andersen, said the headquarters of tabloid newspaper VG had also been damaged.

"I see that some windows of the VG building and the government headquarters have been broken. Some people covered with blood are lying in the street," AP quoted her as saying.

"It's complete chaos here. The windows are blown out in all the buildings close by."

Mr Mjarum said people were in shock in Oslo and across Norway.

"We have never had a terrorist attack like this in Norway - if that's what it is - but of course this has been a great fear for all Norwegians when they have seen what has been happening around the world."

My question is this; This is supposedly a response to Mullah Krekar being accused of terrorism. Before Norwegian prosecutors filed the charge, he said; "Norway will pay a heavy price for my death. If, for example, Erna Solberg deports me and I die as a result, she will suffer the same fate".

I'm quite confused - how do terrorists think when they believe it a good idea to show their innocence by bombing?

Edit: It seems it has nothing to do with Mullah Krekar, actually, as the shooting at Utoya seem to suggest it's actually targeted at AUF, which is the politic party currently governing Norway.

It's useless to attempt to tweeze logic and reasonable sense from the mind of an irrational nutjob.

Have they figured out who did it or why yet? I read a story from a European country the other day about some anarcho-eco terrorist types who got caught with explosives with another partner already in custody. I wouldn't count out something like that either.

It was; I suspect it was a fertilizer bomb. The windows of buildings 4-5 blocks away from the epicenter were blown out, and are burning.

It happened about 3 hours ago, so multiple hours sounds a bit excessive.

Edit: There's also shooting going on in Utoya,which some people suspect is related to the bombing. The police is considering it an "ongoing terrorist activity", so the police seem to suspect there's more bombs that are yet to detonate, according to NRK.

The shooting at Utoya actually seem to suggest it is directly targeted at AUF (the shooting was at the AUF summer camp), which is the current majority party in Norway

glad you're ok man lol. my friend was in england at the time of the explosion, thank God. he lives like 5 min away from there, too lol. i had to visit him when i was in olso back in november. im glad i'm not there now, looking like a buffed up aladdin walking around after a bomb going off cannot be good for my self esteem

Yeah; the police officer heading up the investigation said that "The people going in to the building has been given strict rules to not touch the dead", so he pretty much confirmed there's a lot more than 2 people dead. The reporter also said "Tens of people injured", and civilians in the area state there's injured people everywhere, with ambulance going back and forth from the area all the time, which sure sounds like more than 15.

It's in Norwegian, but that's pretty much a strange dialect of Swedish

About the shooting at AUF's summer camp; the teens there had been told that a Politician would be coming over today to talk to them. And today (about the same time as the bombing), a man dressed as a politician came in to the camp with guns and started shooting towards the teenagers. Witnesses at the camp state that they saw more than 10 people getting directly hit.
