I thought the police press release a minute ago talked about them having found a connection between the two events and the person suspected of the shooting? They chose not to comment about whether or not he was a Norwegian - but witnesses state he looked Norwegian.

um, the only thing I caught so far about that was this from aftenposten (Norways most serious newspaper, not saying much granted)

There might very well be things that haven't hit the newspapers online though, I'm not following the stream right now because it's the same over and over and over again. so I haven't heard the police press release yet, I'll try to dig it up.

NRK just said 9 seriously injured from the shooting have died in the hospital so far, from what I could hear.

Also, 7 confirmed killed in Oslo.

yeah, watching 9pm news on RK now. The police is now positive the two are connected.
Different groups have supposedly started claiming responsibility, but "everyone" are warning caution against assuming that's the answer. Drawing parallells to the Oklahoma bombing in the 90s.

I'm sure the Islamic groups will do the usually claiming responsibility by providing only vague details, but that situation sounds a lot like a homegrown group mad about something political. Although I say that while knowing next to nothing about the individual mentioned in OP, have to get around to reading that.

Mullah Krekar? he's one of our bigger headaches, nobody wants him here, he's a terrorist suspect, he keeps making threats towards the state (and prominent politicians ++), but he'll most likely get killed if we deport him, so we're stuck with him on humanitarian grounds. We're literally held hostages by our own principles.

update: they're leaving the car bomb theory, it seems that the explosion didn't start on street level, but on the 2nd or 3rd floor. (not sure if that was an official statement)

Most major newsorganisations have their main offices in the capital in "Akersgata", which is pretty much next-door to the blast site, so things are a little messy newswise.

edit: 10 confirmed dead on Utøya so far.

police says he's NOT a police officer and never has been, he's being interrogated, and will stay in interrogation for the foreseeable time, the police will answer no question about him at this time. They aren't 100% sure that it's the same dude with the bombing, but it's their current hypothesis. They don't know yet if he was working on his own. They won't say anything about the interrogation or where. They will not confirm the individuals nationality. They won't comment on the nature of the bomb yet. (it's a whole lot of "I can't answer this now")

several heavily injured from Utøya, they won't comment on how. No further dead/injured found in the capital. The island is considered secured now.
there is some uncertainty with regards to if there's 9 or 10 dead on the island so far (according to the police press dude).

new press conference in 10-15 min, not expecting anything new really, more and more commentators are voicing the opinion that it might very well be an internal affair, not related to religious extremism.
(edit: supposed to be the PM this time, prepare for mass crap.)
(mainly bla-bla-bla, then the mandatory caring about our fellow citizens, then trying and failing the "epic speech")

edit: the arrested is confirmed Norwegian by the minister of justice (but let's be real, what this dude says isn't worth the air spent saying it)

It was a camp organised by a political youth organisation. They were not children, rather young adults. Not that it makes anything better.

New press conference:

- They found undetonated explosives on Utøya.

- Confirmed 10 dead on Utøya. They're expecting to find more casualties on Utøya.

- Ethnic Norwegian, 32 years old.

- Assumption of same person based on description.

- Will not comment on ongoing interrogation, no motive stated by suspect, no knowledge of any group association.

- Borders closed [irrelevant, our borderlines are long, we could take the entire population and not be able to cover the entire border]

- They are (for now) working under the assumption that it is a Norwegian "internal matter", no foreign interests involved.
