Pretty cool idea, but I think that it would be too unreliable. If anyone walks in front of one of the lights, or they're not in a direct line of sight with the communication device, it's pretty much useless. The small chance that something moves in front of the light kind of makes it not worth the risk, imo.

It's not really what's going in front of the light, but what's going in front of the reception hole on your device. If you keep that hole cleared then it should be able to read the data from the surrounding light, or at least that's what I understood from the video. Pretty cool, but again it's like the other guy at TED that had a bottle filter that could eradicate world thirst for something ridiculously low like 10 billion dollars, but last I heard it hasn't revolutionized the world.
