Why do you think Robert Downey Jr was under the radar for so long before Ironman. He was locked in one of those Venture Bros learning beds for years, only to be let out for the odd appearance and/or bender.

I like the idea of him as Hank Pym... will love to see where they go with this.

    and it's official
Marvel’s “Ant-Man” has found its hero in Paul Rudd, who will star in the new film from director Edgar Wright hitting theaters July 31, 2015!

The casting of Rudd represents the actor that Marvel had long ago identified as its first choice to play Ant-Man, continuing the studio’s desire to cast actors that bring several dimensions to its onscreen heroes. The film’s plot is being kept under wraps.

“When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," said Marvel's Kevin Feige. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.”

I like how Marvel danced around naming who he will actually play. I'm still thinking he's Scott Lang not Pym.

    Patrick Wilson added
According to Deadline, Patrick Wilson with join the cast of Ant-Man. No word on what the role will be, but Wilson will be another great addition. Wilson was really good in Watchmen and, more recently, The Conjuring. He has a strong presence on screen and often plays subversive characters.

The official cast for Ant-Man is Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. Rumored for the role of Janet Pym is Evangeline Lilly, and Michael Peña will reportedly play an undisclosed character.

Honestly, I could see Wilson as a young hank pym. Too bad they didn't go that route and decided on focusing on Scott Lang .

Matt Gerald, White Power Dave, from 'All Hail the King' has been cast as a Villain
Marvel owns the first weekend of April, 2014, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier storming the box office with an estimated $90-$93 million take. With The Avengers: Age of Ultron filming around the world as competing studios prepare to release their own various Marvel movies, the brand’s current dominance is indisputable.

As we look ahead to 2015, one of the most intriguing releases of that year is Marvel’s Ant-Man, which will begin shooting in Georgia this May. Directed by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) from a script by Wright and Attack the Block director Joe Cornish, Ant-Man has already turned heads with some offbeat casting choices - Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, with Patrick Wilson, Evangeline Lilly and possibly Corey Stoll.

Now we have a report from Deadline that a new addition to the Ant-Man roster could be the first overt connection of that film to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. Matt Gerald, who played White Power Dave in the Marvel One-Shot All Hail The King, is joining Ant-Man as a villain.

Just which villain we don’t yet know (“one of the bad guys” is all we’re told), but as CBM points out, Gerald was previously seen opposite Sir Ben Kingsley, who reprised his role as washed-up actor Trevor Slattery, revealed to be the faux Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Gerald played a Seagate Prison inmate called White Power Dave who challenges Slattery in All Hail The King, the short film included on the Blu-ray and DVD release of Thor: The Dark World.

There is no confirmation that Matt Gerald is reprising his role as White Power Dave for Ant-Man, but we assume this is the case. It would present a nice opportunity to establish one more link between Wright’s film and the rest of the MCU, not to mention a chance to further establish the Seagate-Luke Cage connection.

If Gerald is not reprising his All Hail The King role, then the question is just what kind of Ant-Man villain he’ll be playing. Gerald has a long history of playing police, henchmen and military types in films like Avatar, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Red Dawn - will he be taking a lead villain role this time? Perhaps in the possible 1960s-set timeline?

Marvel has so far been pretty consistent with their cross-over casts – logic suggests that Matt Gerald will likely play White Power Dave again, but the character was enough of a one-shot (ahem) to justify casting Gerald as a different villain.

The film will be essential the the MCU, will tie into Avengers 2
Moving on to Ant-Man, Feige reveals it’s a film that’s been key to the MCU for years, and in fact, it appears Ant-Man is what set a lot of their earlier films in motion:

It was two things – a story Edgar wanted to tell that we’ll see with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and now we’re 11 films in, it’s looking at the characters we’ve already introduced who already have the technology and the brains to do…certain things [laughs].

We changed, frankly, some of the MCU to accommodate this version of ‘Ant-Man.’ Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with ‘Ant-Man,’ going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for ‘Avengers’ the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the ‘Ant-Man’ story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to ‘Avengers.’
This sure sounds like Wright was crucial to the inception of the MCU. It also sounds like Feige is implying that whomever’s responsible for Ultron – the “endearing and funny and strange” villain of The Avengers 2 - is someone we’ve already met, and that his creation is also related to Wright’s original Ant-Man pitch.

With such a vague comment it’s hard to be sure, but the current accepted theory is that Tony Stark will be the creator of Ultron. If Feige isn’t referring to Ultron, then perhaps he’s talking about Vision, another technologically advanced character expected in Avengers 2 and one with even closer ties to Tony.

Whether Tony is responsible for Ultron, Vision, or both, it’s possible he doesn’t do the work alone. In the comics, it’s Hank Pym who is responsible for Ultron, so it isn’t out of the question to speculate the character will still play some role in Ultron’s creation in the MCU. If so, the consequences of that and the subsequent fallout from the events of Avengers 2 will surely factor into whatever Pym does in Ant-Man.

And truthfully, we don’t even know how large a role Pym has to play in Ant-Man. Feige explains the general jist of Rudd’s Scott Lang character and it gives the impression Ant-Man will focus almost entirely on his redemption arc from thief to hero:

Look at that origin of the petty crook who comes into contact with a suit and does his best to make good, and then look at someone like Paul Rudd, who can do slightly unsavoury things like break into people’s houses and still be charming and who you root for and whose redemption you will find satisfaction in.
