No spousal abuse in this movie

The other major black mark on Pym’s record (again, in the comics) is the moment he hit his wife, Janet. This is a story that was re-told where he again hit his partner in the Ultimate Marvel Comics version of The Avengers. Hank Pym beats women. Or at least, he did in two different Marvel Comics Universes. When we spoke with Kevin Feige today at a round table session, he was asked about that storyline and whether it’ll factor into the Ant-Man movie when Michael Douglas plays him onscreen.

Guess what we’re not doing.

After a good laugh from him and the group, Feige continued:

No, but look. I mean it’s…Hank Pym did a lot of things in the comics and he’s a super cool character. And the spin we have on him played by Michael Douglas is even more unique and more different, and I would say that some of the spirit of that plays into his temperament in the film, plays into his gruffness in the film. It certainly does not, in this movie, go to spousal abuse. (laughs)

Much like Tony Stark’s darker moments as a drunk in the Iron Man comics, the less heroic side of these Marvel characters aren’t fully translated into the films to keep the heroes likable and more relatable, especially since these are big money, big audience family movies for Disney.

Good on Marvel about the spousal abuse. The comics are nowhere near as mainstream as the movies.

While the fan boys are already probably having brain aneurisms about that being an important part of his character (much akin to Tony Stark and his alcoholism), Marvel is trying to keep it lighter in tone. Last thing they want is a ton of people boycotting the movie because there's violence against women. They don't want bad press.

I don't know if it's ignored in the comics or what, but it's certainly looked over because of the medium and who the audience is.

You can also tell Paul Rudd is still pretty nervous about what he can and can't say. Not everyone can come off like RDJ, but he's trying so hard to not say anything. It's pretty comical.

Agent Carter to appear in 'Ant-Man'

Ant-Man is set for release on July 17, 2015. It lands in theaters after Avengers: Age of Ultron and will be the final movie in Marvel's Phase 2 movies. SuperHeroHype reported, via Project Casting, that a casting call for a stand-in for the Haley Atwell, who plays Agent Peggy Carter, one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been announced. Could this mean a team up with Agent Carter and Ant-Man?

This would likely mean that Hank Pym was an associate or had interactions with Peggy Carter and Howard Stark in the early days of the Cinematic Universe. Rumors have also stated that a young Alexander Pierce, played by Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Arnim Zola would appear in Ant-Man. It's unclear whether Haley Atwill will actuall appear or if it'll just be the stand-in.

The other question is what's going on with Howard Stark in the movie. Dominic Cooper will reprise the role in the Agent Carter television show but John Slattery, who played Howard Stark in Iron Man 2 (in the flashback/film scenes) has been cast in Ant-Man.

Ant-Man is currently in production but we haven't heard too much about it. These new developments are interesting and raises more questions. We'll have to wait for more information.
