While going through a VPN can always cause problems, keep in mind that FFXI was originally designed for narrowband (dial-up). It has more problems with technologies more commonly used today, such as disinterested router tables and WiFi, than those which it was programmed for.

The FFXIAH threads look like they've partly figured out which ISPs are allowed through the block. I have KT at home right now, my school internet is from Dacom... My husband was thinking of changing ISPs soon, so I guess I'll ask him to try for LG or maybe SK since those seem to be the ones that are able to get past SE's block. Not sure about TERA, if it'll be blocking teh same range of IPs or not... I'm planning to resub once the expansion drops, wanna be prepared.

edit: yeah, the ISP my school uses is blocked... just installed and get the POL-1160 (cannot connect to server) error when trying to update POL Viewer. Can't seem to get my VPN to connect either, could be a router issue >.>

did the makers of TERA have the same idea of blocking an RMT hotzone?

keep me posted on what you find out about ISP's. the earliest i'll be in korea will be january, and i'll likely be living with family for a while. so the earliest i'll be on my own, all set up with my choice of ISP's will be february or march or so. and yeah some guy on allakhazam responded to my post saying to avoid an isp called 'kt' but using 'lg' will work. lg seems to be pretty far down the pecking order of isp's in korea though.

Seeing as the S-E person he talked to told him that he would even have better gameplay experience from Korea, as he will be closer to JP server, it would be funny (and sad at the same time of course), if it turned out he cannot play at all X.x

alright well a little update now that i'm in korea.

i don't have all my computer equipment with me, so i haven't been able to get on and try the game, but i did download playonline onto my laptop to see if i can get on.

currently i'm staying with some family and i have no idea what ISP they're using. when i try to get on to playonline via wi-fi connection to my family's internet, i get error pol-1160 or whatever it is. however, when i plug my iphone into my laptop and use my iphone's internet connection, i'm able to get on playonline just fine. strange thing is, my iphone is connected via wifi to the same family internet connection.

if i'm understanding iphone internet technology correctly (and that's a big 'if'... someone correct me if i'm wrong), in these cases the iphone basically becomes the computer's wireless card, or router. so i wonder if that means that even if using an ISP that's confirmed to be banned like KT, having an acceptable router will still allow it to work?

If you use your iphone as a mobile hotspot by plugging it into your laptop, even if it's connected to a wi-fi network, I'm pretty sure your laptop will still use your phone contract's internet.

oh really... damn. it's my first iphone, and first phone capable of being a mobile hotspot so as i said, my understanding of how that all works is limited.

the apartment that it looks like i'll be moving to uses an Olleh connection, which i believe is KT-based. so guess it's VPNland for me. or i can get my own separate internet connection in the room as well.

Hoping someone can give me a quick rundown for a returning player in relation to accounts, POL and linking to SE account etc.

I have a friend who is looking to get a loan of my FFXI account. I stopped playing in 2010 and logged in once since then. I had since forgot my POL password so had that reset earlier today with an SE agent. I havnt linked my POL account to my SE account yet and after logging into POL it appears i have to do this before i continue any further.

So i currently have a SE account that i use for FFXIV. I do have a security token that i use for FFXIV. I want to de-link the security token from FFXI but not FFXIV. From what i have read i cant unlink the POL account from my main SE account which is fine but what sort of drawbacks will there be given i want to give the account to a friend to use?

If they are going to be paying for expansions / monthly sub to FFXI id imagine i would have to put in their payment info on my end as it would all be done through the SE account right?

Can i de-link my current security token so it is only working for my SE account and FFXIV and not for FFXI?

Any other potential drawbacks or call outs knowing that i want to lend out my FFXI account?

If you care at all about your account, which it sounds like you do(Using the word lend instead of give/sell), lending will only end in tears.

Security token applies to every service on your SE Account, there's no way to pick-and-choose. Only real option for you if you want to go through with it to lend out is to make a second SE Account just for linking to the POL account up.

Cheers for the reply. I dont play FFXI anymore and doubt i will return anytime soon. I can assure you though that it is not for me to sell it. If i was doing that i would have done so 3+ years ago when any decent gear i had then (Adaman Hauberk, Ridill, Dalmy other tanking gear etc) would have made it worth something Friend just asked if they could use it etc so had to go through the re activation / transfer process.

Yep have decided to do that thanks. Just setup a new generic SE account for it.
