Humans perceive patterns in everything, it is not necessarily a 'bad' thing to have presumptions about a certain group of people whether that be due to race, religion, sex, country of origin or anything else. That's actually pretty normal as a human.
When its due to race, its racism. If having these assumptions makes you do negative things, then its bad. If it doesn't... then it didn't really do anything, its still racism though.

That definition of racism is debatable. The word you're looking for is probably racialism but that hasn't caught on. Racism generally also implies a value judgement rather than a mere statement of fact. Usually pertaining to the inferiority or superiority of one or the other.
