People complaining about MMO standard operating procedures, in this day and age....

In other news: Wildstar LVL 50 World First. So much for the ~one fiddy hour estimate that was thrown about, but really, did anyone really believe Carbine Devs on that? Still, a little over a day is kinda silly too, with reality falling somewhere between them.

Yeah.... I don't think they meant 50 hours if you sat at your PC and did nothing else for 24 hours. I've been playing for about 10 hours and I'm level 17. At the pace I am going now it should probably be around that, maybe more seeing as I work full time.

So people still don't understand that servers cost a lot of money, and specially built servers (which most MMOs use) cost even more, take awhile to build and ship, and it doesn't matter how many people actually bought the game, you don't know your playerbase in a year, and sitting on unused hardware is pointless and can't be resold.

It's like how your doctor usually books people in the same time slot, because they know people won't show up (just in this example it's betting on people dropping to go back to WoW or w/e MMO after the initial leveling experience)

Same shit as FFXIV from the looks of it, though they seem to be handling it a little better. Shit always launches with bugs, it's a common thing in both games and just in real world software launches or anything, you can't plan for a 100% perfect release so stop pretending like you could lol.

Could have made 25ish servers to launch with. 13 normal, 7 pvp, 5 for the other random oceanic and rp. 30 would have been safer.

They havent even gotten the Regular launch day people on and the servers are packed soon after they are opened. What they need to do is double up all servers they have.

They can always combine any servers that aren't populated heavily or offer/force low populated server transfers. Can smash 3 poor pop servers into one. Plenty of options.

Not having enough space and screwing people that want to play the game is not the right answer. But its the same thing each dumbass company continues to do and fuck up every single mmo launch.

At the end of the day, they want people to play their game. Its counter-productive to not let them play. And worse to piss them off and make them not want to play at all and convince others not to play. Sure seasoned MMO players know this is to be expected. That is not an excuse for companies to continue to make the same stupid mistake. And not everyone that plays is a seasoned MMO player.

I want tons of noobs to rape on my PvP servers, not wait 6 hours to log in.

    TL;DR
    Proactive > Reactive
Before you call bullshit, you might want to look at the actual facts instead of being the standard MMO launch rage boy. The fact is that tons of people sign up, and then drop in a month, it doesn't make financial sense to plan for that one weekend instead of scaling up in a reasonable fashion. It sucks, but use your fucking brain man.

Yes, people play for a month. That has very little to do with the decision to fuck your launch by not having enough servers. Which, by the way, just crashed. People that have been in queue for the past 5 hours, me, just got fucked. I was 439 in queue. My friend was 9530 to 2700 in queue.

Fucking up your launch by not providing enough servers is stupid and will always be. Unused servers can be sold, underpopulated servers can be merged. It doesnt make financial sense to not give a shit about your customer.

Yeah I was down to 500 people from 3500. Hopefully I can sneak in once the servers pop back up. Gonna make a turbo key for my razer in hopes that will prevent me from logging out

No they CANT, or if you do manage to find a buyer it's not going to be nearly as much as you put into it... who's going to buy custom built hardware? You're talking out your ass, it's 100% sensible when you know x amount of customers will always only play for a free month to not just jump the gun. This happens all the time because these companies build for what they feel will be the average load 3-6 months into the game. Then expand from there if demand warrants it. How many times have we seen games come with TONS of servers, and then merge...merge..MERGE..SUPER MERGE down to 2-4?

The queues say 2 hours but they aren't really, they drop quickly.

You are whining. You act like there is some kind of way to magically create the perfect launch. We have seen that fucking up a launch with too many servers is way worse than doing so with too few. Seriously, grow up and use some fucking rationality. The issues of "reselling" old servers was already answered.

Whenever someone saying that companies like these "don't give a shit about their customers" I just want to smack the child that says it because it is so fucking deluded and self-centered it is unimaginable.

Or just really, really, really wants to play the game he bought. Either way, its why a lot of people won't bother with week one MMO releases.

I have played several. Which is why I dont understand how the same mistake is ALWAYS made. Not enough servers, long queue times, server crashing. How many games have to fuck up launch the same way before someone does it different.

Please tell me the last mainstream MMO that launched with too many servers. I really would like to know, so I can reference them in having enough server space.

Maybe you missed the parts where I said I have been in multiple queues since launch at 2 am ct. I know the actual time is less that what it states. I also have had to wait 5+ hours like 3 times.

I know not to ever EVER take any time off from work or set aside lots of time to play an mmo on launch day. I just so happened to be off for this one. I have gotten to lvl 6 so far. PvS is hard as fuck.

If it always happens then why bitch and moan when it happens everytime? That's like being upset everytime the Cubs don't win the world series.

While I obviously don't know the specifics of what hardware they're sitting on here, I am a bit inclined to side with Ada here. Too many fucking companies underestimate launch traffic. And just because it's "the norm" and an issue that's typically resolved in a week or so doesn't make it any less annoying.

Here's a helpful hint, if the same mistake is made EVERY time...maybe it's not really a mistake but a calculated risk???????

Define mainstream MMO really, I mean TERA to me was fairly mainstream despite being Korean, and they had to cut back on servers, TOR is another someone mentioned, has GW2 had to? MMOs are huge investments of time and money, the smart thing is to play it safe at the start and if it takes off, go from there. If it stays with decent numbers but nothing super high, then you made the right call.

It's like Sun Tzu meets vidya games.

I would venture to say that 1 week of minor annoyance costs them far less then purchasing a handful of servers.

Keep in mind too that launching a MMO is basically saying "Hey, lets open our servers up to DDoS attacks and see how we do!"..shit is going to get sketchy.

    Spoiler: show

Damn, a lot of steps there lol

    This.

Also, companies will continue to under-estimate their server capacity until they see people hit that brick wall, put the game down, and never come back. They know people will stick with it, give them metrics to shoot for, attain them, and pocket the difference than if they had over-estimated and had to burn unused servers.

@ Mersegi: That atunement would be perfectly fine if you could accomplish the tasks, in any order, as it's all stuff you can do by just playing the Elder Game content. The fact that it is linear makes it completely asinine.
