Django Unchained (December 25, 2012)

This movie is coming out in March in Asia, made it a point that I catch it during my visit home in the states, loved it, I think I like Basterds slightly more, but loved it; Waltz was amazing again, sucks that DiCaprio and Jackson didn't get nominated for the Oscars, it should've been Waltz/DiCaprio/Jackson on the supporting list...but then I really wouldn't know who to root for during the awards...I wished this movie had been nominated in more categories.

Finally saw this, was pretty great fun. Cristopher Waltz was good I just wish his accent was a little more obvious I guess? He doesn't sound German what-so-ever.

The movie was almost exactly the same as the original script. There were one or two scenes that weren't in the movie, one was a long sequence that introduced Hilde and Candy then showed how she was bought and taken to his plantation. There was also more time given to the various slavers which makes you hate them even more, in particular a scene where he is puts Hilde in the shed where Django finds her and prepares to rape her.

The ending was improved a lot from the script

In the original script Django just basically takes Laura, Steven, the Slaver guys outside and just kind makes a long speech then shoots them fast. Hence the weird little flashback scene at the end where Waltz is telling Django how he has improved so much and become a great shooter. And with the ending changed that little flashback feels weird and unneeded.

It's not really clear to me why he had to kill Candy's sister Laura. I mean I think there was a very brief mention of her suggesting Django be taken to the slave mines. But before that she is a somewhat sympathetic character since she is emotionally upset by Hilde showing her whipping scars. So it still feels a bit ambiguous and bloodthirsty for him to shoot her in the end, especially when the main villain is already long dead.

The Candie plantation was one of the most notorious in the south. I'd argue that Laura was upset at the sight of the scars on the dinner table, rather than the act of cruelty. Also, recall Candie was away when Broomhilda was thrown into the box. I'm sure Laura was aware of it [and many other instances].

I was pissed how Mr. Waltz's character was killed, or rather the sudden change of character that led to his demise. He was always calmed, two/three steps ahead of the rest; he was a calculating and a smart individual. Then he went all crazy and endangered Django, Broomhilda, and got himself killed. That was out of character and didn't make sense at all.

was there any alluding to that broomhilda might be his daughter? We really know nothing of Dr. Schultz and him being so quick to help django after he mentions that...

otherwise i'd say he was having a Mcfly '"you chicken" moment

It doesn't come out as explicitly in the movie, but Dr. Schultz is supposed to be a highly enlightened German intellectual type who is influenced by the idea of sovereignity and liberty etc. And so he finds the idea of slavery repulsive and morally angering. He's also obviously fiercely independent and stubborn and he hated being put in the situation of having to sanction Candie's retarded Southern customs and all it entails. Hence his reply "I couldn't help it".

Really? I haven't a clue, I know he's generally a good actor. I guess it's just not what I think of when I imagine a native German in the 1800's traveling abroad.
