    Making a new CV

Inb4 lern2google. I tried, believe you me. I also tried the search function, but cv is too short and curriculum vitae yields a bunch of unrelated threads.

On to the topic, i'm updating my cv but i'm having problems with what should be the easiest of it.

Pastimes and leisure (not sure that's how you say it in english)

I know I need to be specific, but I don't want to sound retarded and/or individualist.

So far this is what I had in mind: internet, online video games and computers in general. Magic the gathering with friends, and occasial barbecues and movies at a theater.

The problem I have is that those are heavily frowned upon when you don't know what they're like yourself. IE people saying all gamers are fat greasy fucks with thick glasses and belly cancer, or MTG being a card game, despite being a strategy and technical game.

Should I just make something up so I can look professional like " yes, quite, I read books. I also play squash. Indubidably." or write what I think needs to be but worded properly?

to those of you who know me aka maybe cream soda, no i didnt lose my job im just refreshing cv

To me this sounds like the UK version of what North Americans call a resumé. WHat is wrong with google results and then going to images to see copies of curriculum Vitae's? Or you could just Google resume and do the same thing.

I generally don't write anything of my hobbies unless they are somehow related to the job I'm seeking. I don't think anyone really cares to know that I have a half dying, wired tree in my window that I cut regularly.

What is the purpose of your CV?

CV's are slightly different than a resume iirc. When my wife graduated from college and was looking for a job she had a CV and a resume made depending on the job she was going for. Again I am fuzzy on the subject but if I remember correctly the CV here in the states is more formal than the resume and certaintly would not include "pastimes and leisure" stuff in it. Strictly information pertaining to the job.

The other difference that sticks out in my mind between a cv and resume is how your prior work experience is organized, one is organized by job category and the other is organized by timeline.

    Quick googlefu-
    http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/curric...f/cvresume.htm
    http://jobsearch.about.com/od/curric...culumvitae.htm
    http://how-to-write-a-cv.org/differe...nd-resume.html
    http://how-to-write-a-cv.org

According to these sites the CV is primarily used in teaching or research jobs or grant applications, which makes sense since my wife was going into research at the time. None of them mention any personal non job related information such as the OP was talking about. To the OP in a CV I would think what you are referring to as Pastimes & Leisure would actually be more like, research you have done in your field, published articles relating to your field, classes you have taught in your field, any academics relating to your field, etc.

Buddy of mine built this website. I used it to update my resume. I really like it.

The word I was actually looking for was hobbies. It's my only problem with this. Just about every website i've been to suggested to add it, in details, so the reader could better figure you out. The purpose of this is just scanning the market, see what's available, if anything is better than what I have now. (pretty much anything that pays and is related to internet or computer)

If I do decide to change job, I want something more in my field of interests, so what i'm trying to squeeze in there would more or less be related to the job i'm interviewed for. I'm just not sure if online video game or strategy card games are worth mentioning, or do they make you look childish and unprofessional.

Yeah I would never include a hobby or anything like that in a cv or resume. If the job you are applying for wants to know more personal information about you like that they will ask you during the interview. The exception is when your hobby or specific activity pertains to the job you are applying for. For example if you are applying for a job as a programmer you can include on your resume that you wrote your own game engine in c++ and wrote your own shaders in c# at home in your spare time or something along those lines. Or if you are applying for a job as an underwater photographer you can include that you are a certified scuba diver and periodically go diving in your free time. Stuff like that.

But that's just me, maybe others will have a conflicting opinion on a hobbies section in a cv/resume.

If you want to have a good CV, you'll still have to adjust it to every job you seek. Usually, before applying for anything, I write down why I want the job, and why I think they should want me, then adjust my resume after that.

There are tons of people that want the job, try to find reasons for why the employer should want you.

Are you applying for a job in a gaming company? Then naming that you play games is relevant. Are you going to design translation programs? Not as much. It's really common sense.

If I was a hiring manager and saw hobbies listed on a CV, I'd probably not consider you unless you had a stellar work history with impressive companies you've worked for. If a hiring manager wants to know more about your personality and hobbies, they'll either Google you or ask during the in-person interview. I'd keep hobbies off unless it's extremely relevant to the position.

don't put hobbies on there unless you've demonstrated some sort of leadership or excellence related to them, like... if you love to fish, and you're the organizer for a 500-person fishing competition in the summer, idk. or if you were the founder or leader of a big club in college. things like linkshell leader should stay off.

This times a billion. A questionable comma use may be overlooked, but a spelling error is death. We were hiring interns at work and we came across someone who had interned at some pretty impressive places, but his resume had two spelling errors. We didn't call him in for our interview round. If you're that careless on your resume, chances are you'll be equally as careless at your work.
