Taika Waititi directed the mid-credits scene

Taika [Waititi] shot that - I can't say if it's from Thor 3 or not, but we had our set up and were going to strike it after I finished shooting and it's a very expensive set with the chamber of relics and the window and everything... I don't know where they were on the script process, but it was before they were in production. Taika wrote that scene and came in and shot it. We had no specific intention at that point to use it as the tag, but after we finished our movie we felt that it was kind of perfect. It plays really well, the audience likes the uplift of Strange being introduced to the wider MCU. Until then he's not really a part of it, he's just a story happening on his own - but after that tag, it's all changed.

I have a question about MCU placement. Dr. Strange was mentioned previously as being watched by Shield. So does this movie take place in the past and will catch up to current events or was he being watched for other reasons.

I'm gonna assume that the parts where he was a neurosurgeon and at least part of his training with the Ancient One are in the past. Not hard to believe Shield is aware of the Ancient One and keeps tabs on anyone undergoing training.

Before Strange has the accident, Rhoades is mentioned, so the beginning of the movie takes place after Civil War, add to that a couple of months of training, and I would say it plays about a year after the third Cap movie.

Stephen Strange was mentioned by Hydra as a possible threat ("Now or in the future") to Hydra that they wanted to eliminate using their weapon in the Winter Soldier.

All of this is in the present. Stephen Strange was a "future threat" back then. Video shows this at 2:25 in.

Thanks. This was actually what I was referring to. Considering that this is in Cap 2 and A LOT of things have happened in that time up until the present timeline of MCU, this is where my thoughts about placement come into play. The wording of "Now or In The Future" implies that he is of notable threat at this very moment. Bruce was already identified as the Hulk by this time and assumptions could be made for Moon Knight and such. This is what leads me to believe that this movie has already happened (or at least side by side to give leg room) with Cap 2, which is a middle point for the current arc in the universe.

Given that, what you mentioned from the movie doesn't add up to me. I know you don't have all the answers but it doesn't fit with how SHIELD/Hydra have been doing things with their program. They didn't target people UNTIL they became a threat. What could a neurosurgeon possibly have done to be on their radar THAT early. If the beginning of this movie takes place AFTER Civil WAR, we have ALL the events of Cap 2, Thor 2, Avengers AoA, and Cap 3. Also adding that after his training is a full year before he's seen again? Just leaves me more confused

I agree with you 100%. I think it's best to not question the timeline too much. Things sound fine when they are mentioned in passing in the movies but if you overanalyze stuff, you will have a bad time.

Maybe he just meant Strange being viewed as a threat because he would never work in Hydras world. He saves people, and by the trailer seems very damn good at it. This is all speculation, but if Hydra did end up going through with whatever plans they had, Strange would be in direct opposition of them, whether he could bend reality or save targets that Hydra was attempting to take out and failed.

All MCU movies take place at the time they are released and the TV series' last episodes are set on the day of their release. For Captain America: First Avenger, this means that the present time scenes where Cap is discovered/defrosted happen in 2011.

The first exception to this will apparently Guardians of the Galaxy 2 which is said take place a few months after the first movie (placing it chronologically pre-Ultron in Phase 2)

The main parts of Hulk IM2 and Thor all take place in about the span of a week so there is overlap. But I believe the way it is structured is that end of Iron Man 2 is before the after-credits scene of the Hulk, but the start of the Hulk movie is before IM2 and concludes around the same time.
