Borderlands will be available via a regular retail release as well as Valve's Steam downloadable service, and when the game comes out it'll have Steamworks features.

The benefit of Steamworks include: Steam cloud support, Steam Achievements, auto-updating, downloadable content, multiplayer matchmaking, and more.

Steamworks features will be available for both the boxed PC edition of the game as well as the downloadable version on Steam. All Borderlands 2 formats (the game also comes out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) come out on September 18.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford announced at PAX East today that the company's shoot-and-loot RPG Borderlands 2 will (almost definitely) have a fifth playable class, eventually.

It's called the Mechromancer. It's a young cyborg girl that can, apparently, control mechanized units including the D374-TP — AKA "Deathtrap."

Pitchford said that the Mechromancer is at this stage of development a "new idea."

"It's a concept right now," Pitchford explained at today's Gearbox panel. "It doesn't exist yet." He showed drawings of a young, redheaded girl with pigtails and goggles. One of her arms was mechanical. Her companion Deathrap looked vaguely like a cross between the Claptrap mascot and a T-800 Terminator, patched together from various robot parts.

Pitchford says the Borderlands 2 team is committed to adding the Mechromancer to the game after the core game is finished. The class will be "post-launch DLC," hitting about two months or so after the game's launch in September.

"We're going to give it to you for free," he later added.

Gearbox also detailed the game's character customization, which features a color and decal editing system, unique and Weapons Manufacturer-specific skins and rare, collectible decorative heads that players can apply to their class of choice.

Players of the original Borderlands will receive a unique head and skin for each class as a bonus.
