It’s all the rage now to punish the used gamer, at least that’s the glass-half-empty view. Rage, on the other hand, is trying a half-full approach and giving those that purchase the game new a booster of single player content that you wouldn’t even miss if you didn’t have access to it. According to id Software Creative Director Tim Willits, you’ll be able to explore sewer sections of the game so long as you don’t opt for a used discount.
“If you bought the game new, that would be open for you. You still have to download it, but you don’t have to pay for it,” Willits said in an interview with Eurogamer. “Those hatches are all over. Most people never find them. But as soon as you do, you’re like, oh. And then you start to look for it. That’s our first-time buyer incentive.”
So it’s subtle, and most players wouldn’t even know they’re lacking content. Well, I guess until now, since once you read about it you’ll try to find it.
“I can tell you, some people will buy Rage, download that, and still never set foot in those things,” Willits said. “They just won’t. I think that’s fair. It’s cool. It’s outside the main path. We’re not detracting from anything. But I know some consumers, when you can’t avoid it, then you get a little touchy subject.”
I know that any jostling of content tends to ruffle gamer feathers, but this seems like the best approach to the issue. Don’t actively punish players with used games, but make sure new players know they’re getting special treatment.
Aside from that, the rest of the interview has some awesome commentary from Willits, who has been around the block a few times. Give it a read, especially if you’re an old id Software fan.
