Well first, the 'defenders' obstruct the traffic, scare the drivers, then they move in a very fucked up way and dont have the decency to let the last guy (the mini-van) turn his vehicle around, add the whole running like headless chickens. Plus the cops just walking next to them should call for some order, I dont know, fucked up way to be the anti-riot group.

Dont get me wrong, people banding together is fine, but that video has them looking like another bunch of guys wanting to beat up some other guys.

Been kicking off here (thankfully not our bit of town) for the last few hours - police station petrol bombed, one of the 6th form college buildings alight, people trying to rip a bit of shit up in the city centre. Quite why the police decided to let the local football derby go ahead this evening is beyond me.

yeah, im glad you're safe and i hope other BG'ers are too. i was curious as to who was this effecting on here anyways. my cousins and aunt actually migrated down to liverpool with my uncle and so far they're perfectly fine. but i wonder if their homes were broken into and whatnot.

think about it from the police's perspective.

you've got 2 groups of people fighting eachother in the street and a clusterfuck of violence and idiots trying to throw backward umbrellas. it gives them twice as much work to do than they would normally have to because of it, had the other side just stay in their houses and protect their belongings and family instead of trying to be a hero. its not like counter strike, where you know which ones to shoot at lol. these guys are all dressed up as thugs, some shirtless, some with hoods and they're all acting like idiots

Yeh fair enough. When I first saw it, it indeed did look a bit confusing/messy and I agree it could be done better, but perhaps i was a bit overwhelmed by the possibility of vigilante action that's all.

I don't know too much about English politics, but I just saw that a far-right group has planned to form a militia for get rid of the riots. I assume the right is at least as racist in England as here, so hopefully this doesn't get worse.

The leader of a British far-right group says its members are taking to the streets of British cities in an attempt to quell riots that have spread across the country for four nights.

Stephen Lennon, leader of the English Defense League, told The Associated Press that up to 1,000 members planned to turn out in Luton, where the group is based, and others areas that have suffered unrest, including the northwestern city of Manchester.

Lennon said some members had were already carrying out patrols trying to deter rioters, and that hundreds more would join them Wednesday.

"We're going to stop the riots — police obviously can't handle it," Lennon told the AP.

Fuck. Odeon in L1 have closed so that's my Super 8 showing cancelled tomorrow. The Apple store have emptied all their stock from the shelves and locked up for the day too according to the TV news before.

I was going planning to mosey over to L1 for a bit of retail therapy, guess that can wait for a little bit ^_^;

We got off pretty lightly overnight really - 5 police stations attacked (3 badly), some cars burnt out, some very spectacularly bad attempts at looting and I think they set one college on fire with 100 arrests - still not good (thankully our bit of town is quiet).

And woe betide anyone questions just what the fuck the parents of the 11 year olds out there in the middle of it are doing... which is probably a large part of how we got into this mess in the first place.

Seems to start kicking off about 5ish with kids gathering and the internet rumour mill going into overdrive, goes nuts from about 8 onwards - was still kicking off in our area when I went to bed at about 1.30... then business as normal during the day - there are a tonne of groups trying to organise cleanups during the daytimes. That's the really odd bit about it - there's some brilliantly British stuff going on like the photo going around of someone making cups of tea for some of the riot police, and them using their riot shield as a tray to hold the cups, or the sign on the Subway door in Manchester along the lines of "due to the imminent collapse of society, this store will be closing at 6pm today"

I realized that I still had the emails Facebook sent to me with two of his posts. There were a few more of him saying that we should go out on the street and stop the looters and thugs but I'd already deleted them.

Yusuf Mohamed wrote "So why don't you lot go and talk to people? What are you waiting for?? Stop complaining and make a difference."

And after explaining that because we're living in Spain we can't do anything (and that we don't want to get ourselves killed by going against thugs he said;

At the end there (Cynthia is my partner) it looks like he's defending those who loot because they can't afford those things... which is utter bullshit. And then trying to make a sarcastic comment about us being able to afford a holiday (living somewhere isn't the same as a holiday, but that's irrelevant).
He then went on to claim that he alone stopped a street of people from looting... yeah ok.

What also makes me angry is that he said they're not attacking on the street. Last night three people were killed because they tried to defend their properties while news camera men were attacked and random peoples houses were set alight.

I hate these scum. I'd love to watch them burn.

wtf are they doing, stealing other people's mail? Jesus fuck that's a huge penalty here in the states, if it is the same in the UK those fuckers are gonna go away for a looooong time.

I doubt the thugs were breaking into the Post Office for mail, there wouldn't be any in a small high street office anyway as it's all sent to Royal Mail sorting offices at closing time. Post Offices in the UK run a bunch of financial services (they're basically also a bank, a phone company and an insurance company plus they handle a ton of minor government transactions like paying car taxes, fishing licences, paying out pensions/benefits etc.) so the criminals would had been after money or paperwork such as car tax discs they can turn into money.
