People are attacking the police as well because deep down they know they can't do shit. You might've heard UK police are "soft" unlike American police who will literally swarm and take people down (based on what I've seen in those police chase documentaries).

Until the police arrives in greater numbers or are giving extra powers this will get progressively worst. But the question remains now if the police gets more voilent, what would the seemingly larger numbers crowd of looters/scum do?

Otherwise even I was out of the loop until today as I was off from work. It all began otherwise last Thursday when a (you might've guessed) black man got shot dead by the police.

Yeah it seems the cops are pretty sedate and unable to control anything, but that's what happens when your police force is defensive rather than offensive. At the rate at which it's spreading, to protect property, they need to disperse the crowd. A few rubber/bean bag rounds and some gas will do wonders. I'm sure the US has tons to spare. Gas that is anyway.
