I thought 4 was okay, but there were issues that kept it from being truly engaging. The encounter rate was higher and the steering on the ship was awkward. The game sped up a lot once you recruited Viki, but by that point I think most people gave up on it.
4 wasn't thaaaat bad, just incredibly inferior to the other games. The one thing that I liked was that it returned to the original combat system (compared to 3), the bad thing was that it was only 4 characters instead of 6, and that the character development was somewhat... non existant.
Snowe was probably more developed than 99% of the cast in 4, which says alot. Like, I played 4 all the way through, got my best ending, and while I didn't HATE it completely, I don't ever plan to go back to it and it made me not bother checking out 5, which I hear is actually good. While I've gone and replayed 1-3 many times over the years.
If you're gonna replay the series, do it in chronological order, except save 4 for last. Or not at all.
You have to play 1 before 2 just for McDohl alone. Character is too fucking epic in 2 not to have him.
I loved Suikoden 5. It starts out a bit slow, but picks up in a huge way and ties into Suikoden 2 in an amazing way. And Suikoden in an amazing way if you know where to look.
4 was extremely meh. Uninteresting plot/characters on the whole and the enemy army was the least threatening/compelling/interesting of any of Suikoden's to date (and one of the greatest things about Suikoden is that you're supposed to really feel like you're locked in this titanic struggle with a much more powerful force and basically grabbing victory by inches). The game was also mechanically flawed with high encounter rates (especially in the sea) and stuff.
1 and 2 are both amazing and highly recommended. 1 is mechanically less polished but still a very enjoyable playing experience. 2 remains more or less a masterpiece, although it is quite easy.
5 is very... very... very slow to start but it feels like "real Suikoden" once you get into it (it's one hell of a long game too). There are several very powerful plot twists which I won't spoil here. My main complaint with this game from a storyline perspective is that when you get your tactician, for the majority of the game after that point, you basically steamroll the enemy army as she doesn't really have an equal on the other side (like Shu vs Leon in S2)... though there is a REALLY tense part of the game which is dissolved a bit too easily. From a mechanical perspective, the encounter rate is still a bit on the high side and the recruitment mechanics are unnecessarily difficult and time-specific. Most fun army battles of the series though in my opinion.
I stopped playing 5 when I screwed up with recruiting the detective. I'm not sure how far I was but too far to want to start over again. If they would've let you skip the damn CS's I would play it again but yeah, no.
So Suikoden 5 is worth playing? I stopped playing this series after 4 since it was slow and I got tired of looking at the main guy running around like he has a stick up his ass.
I played Suikoden since the first one came out, I loved 2, and 3 was kinda meh for me. I also didn't mind the DS Suikoden, It wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad.
5 has more of a feel of the first 2 for me, except that its in ps2 graphics. The only thing I would do is use a faq for recruiting people because many of them have an annoyingly small window where you can get them.
Once you beat 5 you can also do a new game + and skip cut scenes.
A few days ago, I was wondering if I should bother doing my summer suikoden marathon, mainly because I've been stuck playing ff11 -.-, but with these news, I've decided to go through with it. :D (Taking a break from 11, which I needed anyway, gooooooooooooo suikoden)
Setting up my stream now, will post on the streaming sub section when it's up and running. Hope I can go through all 5 games before school starts. (*'-')
edit: it's up!

I liked 4 more than 3, but I wouldn't say either are particularly strong entries since both tried to stray from 'the norm' in some way. The DS game didn't really bother me, and the Tactics game spun off from 4 was also decent. Shame the series seems pretty much 'dead' for now, though.
Sad news, I am a huge Suikoden fan. If you guys enjoyed the first 2 and are on the fence about 5, do yourselves a favor and pick it up. I immensely enjoyed it. It's a definite return to the Suikoden most people enjoyed.
About 4: I oddly seemed to enjoy it, more so than most people. I'm a fucking weirdo D: I think for me its definitely 1>2>5>4>3. I just remember being very annoyed by Hugo for some reason.
I could never really take the furry races in Suikoden seriously, and since Hugo pretty much always had that duck and other ducks following him around, it kind of multiplied against my frustration of little kids somehow toppling armies such where, in comparison to Chris and Geddoe, at least had the benefit of some knight training or mercenary work in their favor. And even though the game tried to pimp choice, it was pretty obvious they wanted to make him out the main hero, too.
Yeah, Hugo is the 'official' Flame champ.
Hugo is the son of tha Karayan chief, and the Karayan clan is pretty warrior-like, and stuff. I'm sure he's had a good amount of training.
And I fully fucking agree. Nay-kobolds can go suck a dick, so can the lizards and the ducks. Elves and Dwarves are ok, kobolds are ok too, but pushing it a liiiiiiiiittle bit. Ridley is a fucking badass, though.
Sad, considering all the open holes of plot and cliffhangers they left with Suikoden III and never went back to make a follow up game.
V was definitely a good way to go out, I loved that game. I never sat down for a week straight uninterrupted (with other games or things) and played a single player RPG like that.
In terms of favorites.. For me I liked II,I,V,III,IV, in that order.
I know I must sound insane liking a sequel more than the original but let's face it.. II's story on top the of gameplay changes is without a doubt the best.
