    Suikoden II blows Suikoden away.

While I agree the story in II was better told, since it was pretty much a rehash of the first, the characters from the original are still way better then any produced afterwards not named Luca Blight. From Flik/Viktor to the nerdgasm when you finally see McDohl and Gremio in II, I didn't care for none of the characters in II as much as I did for those from the original. Hell, half the new characters of II were carbon copies from those in the first.

Uh, the stories are pretty damn different.

And Suikoden 1 was full of random useless characters. Example: 5 different blacksmiths. I'm not sure if the fact that even the most random character was allowed to fight in your party hurt or helped that game. 2's characters and development were muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better.

Well, II had a bunch of random ass squirrels, and at least the blacksmiths contributed to weapon upgrades if I'm remembering right. Needless to say, all the games had their share of characters who were seemingly just there to fill out the tablet list.

I call bullshit, the characters from I made II that much better. Riou/Jowy/Nanami were lame as shit compared to the dynamic of Tir/Gremio/Pahn/Cleo/Ted. Suikoden I set the standard, all II can do was reciprocate and hope to turn out just as awesome, which it didn't. They even tried to redo the Neclord battle which was gay as shit lol. Like I said, besides Luca Blight, all the awesome characters of II were originally from the first.

For fucks sake, Alen and Grenseal were the archetype to Camus and Miklotov.

To each his own. Even today I remember most of the characters from II, some of their background and such, while I can barely name a couple of characters from I and remember how they looked. Suikoden I was really good, but I don't agree that II didn't improve upon it.

Plus, we're talking about the games as a whole, not only certain aspects and II had superior gameplay, graphics, ton of awesome content.

Suikoden II did a very good job with the continuity of the original, which just made it all the better. My mind was blown when I first entered Gregminster in II and started hearing all that familiar somewhat changed music, characters, nostalgiaaaa. It was just such a fucking amazing package of all the originality of I, and then some.. and by that I mean all the insanely new things like the animals/monsters you can recruit, bringing Neclord back again, cameos, Georg fucking prime, more cameos, better strategy combat, return of Yuber, along with the bittersweet main storyline, better combat, made it the best in my opinion.

My view is skewed because I played 2 before 1, but it's natural to think of 2 as better since it's far more refined. I doubt anyone doesn't appreciate what 1 does, but 2 feels much more powerful. Nostalgia to the max right now.

    This, I guess.

And the squirrels weren't stars, except for muku, so what's the point?

And yeah, Miklotov/Camus=Alen/Grenseal, so what? The entire series always has these types of character similarities. Hey guys, every suikoden has a bath, so they must be a copy of the first guy! Every suikoden has an elevator inventor, must be the same as the first one! Come on.

Putting aside II's amazing story and stuff, it'd still be better than I simply because they let you have a party inventory and people weren't limited to 1 rune.

The beginning of Suikoden still kind of irks me too. They don't develop the story very much until you're suddenly crowned leader. I still love the game though. It was my first great PSX RPG experience.

Honestly I think I'm one of the few people who actually really liked III. Like not as much as 1/2 obviously, but it's actually my 3rd favorite in the series(since I never played 5). The battle system was radically different but I liked a few of the changes, like the casting system that would give a reason to bother casting low tier spells over higher tier ones, shields being more worthwhile due to Shield skill + being in the front row, etc. The army battles were ass though, god.

Thomas' story is the only reason worth playing 3. I wish they had expanding further with him.

Really? Thomas' chapter 1 bored the fuck out of me and his chapter 2 was just a rushed mixture of everyone else's story.

II > I for the sole reason you don't need a damn Rune to go FASTER.

Nah, I think I like both equally. I never actually beat 1 until Julian started playing and caused me to ... procure a copy of Suikoden I to play. Now that I have, I admit I like a lot of things about the story from 1, but 2 definitely refined a lot of things. Multiple Runes, Party Items, don't need to have people in your party to equip/rune/blacksmith them, data on what your damn spells did (mainly Water/Wind. Sometimes forget what heals/does damage.)

If you look in the instruction manual of Suikoden you can see a portrait of the six great generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire.

    Spoiler: show
One of them is Georg Prime.

    .
Yeah, when the original game first came out I always wondered who was that extra character in the portrait in my booklet and was mind blown when I realized it in the second game.

I like that portrait a lot, I actually have a wallpaper of it in color. I should really try looking for it.
