Yeah...that's exactly what it means. A story about someone being angry and demanding the lives of those that do not bow to him totally means it's right. I guess I should start telling stories too. Maybe then I can finally rob a bank and it will be RIGHT!

As far as the fig tree, I look at that like maybe he was grumpy and hungry, killed the fig tree because he could, people saw him do it, he had to say something profound to redirect their attention because what really happened was he lashed out. He's just that good. "Look over here! Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

When I say context, I don't mean just read the passages before and after the verse in question, but understand the time, the people the book is addressing, the beliefs those people held, and who is actually writing the book. Then you have some context.

Religion and crazy are no more correlated than atheism and crazy. Crazy doesn't care what your world view is, but it can certainly help shape it.

There's no such thing as a religion debate. Only religion arguments. It's nigh-impossible to change an adult's fundamental worldview; they have to do it themselves. Human nature, etc.

That is the nature of all debates, most of all televised/internet debates.
Rarely, if ever, will one of the debaters change his mind, regardless of the subject; only potential uninformed witnesses (lurkers in this case) can be convinced either way.
Which is why forum threads (and televised political debates) are so easily derailled into one-on-one arguments of "you said; I said"... we've all done it, and by that point one side is simply trying to obfuscate the stupid shit he said. Sometimes, both sides.

The correlation of atheism and insanity is completely null: atheists can be crazy, of course, but there's no connection between "not postulating shit you can't prove" and insanity; on the other hand, the inverse could be an alternate definition of insanity.
