    Traffic Citation and Insurance

I received a citation while I was driving home from a concert today and I was wondering if its something I need to report to my insurance. I was speeding, but only got cited for driving in the left lane when the right lane was open. The state trooper said it won't put any points on my license, and I don't plan on fighting it or anything. I searched Google but all the results seem to be about speeding tickets. Thanks BG.

Nah, that's actually law in some places. It's law here, too, but I've never heard of anyone actually getting in trouble for it.

If it doesn't put points on your license, I doubt it will raise your insurance. Don't worry about it, and no you don't have to "report" it to your current insurance company.

Worst case, go to your court date and request defensive driving school and it'll be dismissed.

the shit goes on your record and will be seen by your insurance company/broker the next time you go to renew your coverage. unless you have a shit ton of offenses it won't affect your rating too much if any at all.

This is my first time receiving something other than a warning. I was considering going to the court and pleading no contest or maybe not guilty since I feel it would be harder to prove than I was speeding, but since he let me off I don't think its worth the trouble. The area the court is in is 2 hours or so away, so I'll prolly just end up mailing in a guilty plea and paying it. Currently I'm on my dad's insurance policy too, so I don't know if they'll check me for that. My motorcycle is on a different policy of my own too, so maybe I'll report to them.

But yeah, I realize its a real law, stupid as it is. Its funny because there are signs everywhere that say "Slower traffic keep right", and while most people were already speeding, I was just speeding more and got noticed.

If it doesn't add points to your license, just pay it. Simplest resolution.

    You got a nice cop.

Even on things that give points, many places have legal bribery programs (even though they don't call it that) where you pay a bit extra for the ticket so they won't put it on your driving record and you won't get any points.

Hell, the cop that wrote me the ticket was upselling the program. (it was worth it paying something like 200 instead of 155 on a speeding ticket to keep my record spotless)

It's called a diversion and yes, you should pretty much always do it. The only thing is that if you get another ticket in the next X amount of time and they connect the 2 (which they may or may not, but the idea is that they're supposed to), then they both go on your record.
