Firefox 17 seems to have fixed my memory leak/50% cpu hang/crash issues so far on my work PC. I've browsed all the sites I considered "dangerous" (which causes my hangs/leaks) and so far no issues.

Spoke too soon. Browsed a new one today (because I went to watch an episode and wanted further information, I don't usually use this site), Bulbapedia. Loaded up a page, insta-memory leak 400mb > 800mb rapidly at 50% CPU. Had to kill it.

Wonderful, upgraded firefox from 15 to 17 and now image resizing is broken. Instead of rescaling the image to fit the screen it does nothing.

I'd love to at this point, firefox crashes at least 4 times a day and creating new profiles hasn't remedied it. Kind of fucked unless Chrome decides to support vertical tabs.

Not using Chrome here for similar personal preference reasons. I just don't understand why Firefox keeps crapping out bad major version updates. Sometimes I just want to go back to 3.6 where everything worked.

Chrome isn't all that faster on a "old" system. Speaking from experience on various laptop/desktop specs here but if you have an i5/i7 then Chrome yes, is rather faster marginally.

(based on eyeballing, otherwise it's quick to load up, for sure. But as for pages loading and such? Is there even a proper way to benchmark it? Either way unless it's some obscure page, most of the time it's neglible enough for me not to care too much)

Example: On Windows XP though using a P8700 CPU @ 2.6ghz, Chrome is faster than IE or FF if you browse less than 5 tabs. Open more than that then you find 20+ Chrome Processes clogging up your background memory which in turn actually slows down your machine. If firefox does not memory leak for a period of time, it happily hovers at 70-250mb memory depending on tabs opened, but in this case I would say Firefox is faster by far. Chrome just slows down to a pig wading through treacle.

Then again, this is also dependant on what sorts of addons people have installed and could easily flactuate.

Browser speed is a funny/weird discussion. I can make my IE8 go just as fast as Chrome/Firefox if I disable all of the addons except for flash that comes with it (everything is enabled by fault), and it works just as fine.

I always found Chrome to be very laggy and it really didn't like my tendency to have multiple tabs open at a time. (I'm running Firefox right now with 35.) I was using Chrome for just one website that didn't seem to like Firefox, but I couldn't stand it anymore and went back to Firefox ... anything that won't support Firefox properly can suck a dick.

Firefox does suck up a lot of resources but if I restart it once daily, I don't usually have any problems.

I am using firefox 20, and i have literally zero complaints anymore. I still can't leave it open forever, but it doesn't cause any problems for at least 2-3 weeks, at which points, if ram usage is enough of a problem that i need to restart it, i appreciate the reminder to update it anyway.

Chrome is slightly faster, but the difference is insignificant with a decent computer, so i'd rather the extra features of firefox. Though i do like the performance of it on my laptop (not enough to actually switch, but it is nice).

v18 Mac beta here. Flash on OSX still a performance clusterfuck in Firefox compared to Chrome/Safari. Otherwise, no issues here.

And firefox 18 is out. Seems like it's bugfixes mostly. And if things have been installed on your firefox behind your back (like something MS did once) you'll know. Here's a article on the changes.

Some people have complained (not new) but I haven't seen any problems yet. ^^

I'd been wondering when the hell it'd ship, it seems like this update took a lot longer than the previous whole-number increments, hopefully that means it's especially good. Hoping it doesn't break tree style tabs, haven't updated to beta because of that.

Salodin: There are actually script blockers/Noscript like extensions for Chrome, I did some research when I was writing a guide for PS2 to PC swappers for FFXI on Alla and FFXI AH. (PS2 players as a rule tend to be security dumbish. There are exceptions.)

The only problem is..they either don't save when you allow something, or they are a major pain in the caaan to set up. (I installed Chrome for a short time to check them out..)

Still likes to turn to shit after a few hours of use on my Mac, but that just may be due to this old clunker having 2gb of RAM, and the browser just assumes everyone has 8gb+ these days and pretends memory management isn't required.

At least Flash instance handling has gotten leaps and bounds better on OSX, even if it still makes the browser chug when embedding. Probably thanks to part on both Adobe and Firefox's side of thing.
