I want to punch people I see completely blowing stop signs, which people do all the time in my neighborhood. There are dozens of 4way stop signs around and I can understand how most of the time there's not any problem with not stopping, but most of the time I see it, I'm about 5 feet away from the intersection when they blow through, and if I didn't bother slowing down, there would have been a crash.
Also constantly get people running stop signs in day light when there's a car stopped ahead of them. person to the right stops 1st, then I stop. I let the person to the right go 1st cause he obviously has the right-away, then the person behind him just drives off right behind him without even stopping.
Hilarious. This bitch has you all twisted.
Stop signs are more than likely placed in areas where you can't see what's on the road until you're past the white line and the nose of your car in the lane. Rolling through or ignoring stop signs in places like that is incredibly reckless. But if you're on a road where there are no parked cars(the fucking worst obstruction), buildings, or whatever in your line of sight to the intersecting roads then by all means roll through the stop sign(I've never heard of a legitimate reason for having to, by law, come to a complete stop even at stop signs where there's NOTHING keeping you from seeing oncoming traffic; but I'd be happy to reevaluate my opinion if someone's got something).
Red lights are a different story. In my opinion, you're practicing bad driving and after running x amount of red lights you are y% more likely to drive through a yellow/red light in traffic when you're coming in fast and have a moment to decide to stop or go. Aside from the fact that some lights are also in areas you can't reliably tell if someone else is on the road with you.
Souj's post is a perfect example of why I hate everybody on the road around me. Can't wait until everybody has a GPS wired into their car and they get tickets mailed to their homes for not stopping at stop signs, slowing down on yields, and running through reds - oh it's coming, motherfuckers.
5 minutes of your life are inconvenienced to be a little more safe. stop at the fucking signs and lights, jesus. Gotta race back to that lonely computer!
I understand the temptation, and I admit I've run a red a few times late at night because it was either broken or ridiculously long for some reason. But I don't do it repeatedly for the very same reason you want to get home faster. No one is perfect, especially when they're tired (drunk, high (don't tell me weed doesn't affect your driving stfu), road head, etc). There's also lots of dumbasses who think the rules don't apply to them if they're drunk and have the road all to themselves. Rolling stops are also bad because you might run into people who take your idea one step further and just blow through stop signs. I've also on the very rare occasion not seen a stop sign and went straight through it. So yeah it's risky, and you shouldn't do it. Right turns are ok, but you gotta stop and look both way like your parents should have taught you. You also have to keep in mind when it comes to driving, you're going to be driving a fucking lot in your lifetime most likely. Bad habits that seem trivial in risk will be compounded over time.
Is there anyone in the world gullible enough to believe that stop signs with white borders are optional? Also, stop at stop signs or get the fuck off the road.
There's little reason not to stop at a stop sign, since it really doesn't take long. As long as you at least slow way the fuck down though, i'd never complain about it.
As for red lights, i treat them like stop signs at night. If i stop, and make sure no one is coming, there's really no risk.
I don't really agree with blowing through stop signs because there's no real wait, you just gotta stop and go. Is it a waste of time? Not really.
Red lights? At a certain time of night ALL RED LIGHTS should have rules of stop sign: stop and go.
It is utterly ridiculous to sit at a stop sign waiting for it to turn green for more than 20-30seconds passed 11pm.
In my opinon, you should be able to stop at a red light, tell if anyone is coming or not and go if it's clear.
Holy shit if this is true that sucks.
But it really makes a valid point. My uncle used to always tell me when I was young that, "it doesn't matter how good a driver you are. What matters is how bad a driver the other person is." In other words. If you protect yourself by following the law even if you think you don't "need" to, it could save your life when some idiot fucks up.
And don't be that idiot that fucks up.
It only takes one time to miscalculate and you or someone you care about can be dead.
And all that because you don't want to wait the extra 5 seconds? Stupid. I don't care what justification you give. Laws aren't there to piss you off, they're there to keep you safe. Even if it goes beyond the "minimal level" of safety. Think of how low the car accident rate would be if everyone obeyed traffic laws. But people break them to save a minute here, and a minute there. And then all the dead become a statistic. Really not worth it.
^I lol'd.
Risking life and limb for literally seconds off your drive is a quick trip to Darwinville.
Not only do I stop at stop signs and red lights but I use my turn signal at 2am. I'm definitely over cautious but I've yet to get a ticket in 9 years of driving.
Living in DC, and working and having a bunch of friends in northern VA, there's really no time at which there is no one on the road. Also, cops around here can be pricks and there's a ton of red light cameras. I stop at stop signs, I stop and wait at red lights. Why?

A few years ago I was on my way home with a couple people at about 1 am. The area we were at is completely dead by 9 pm, so at 1 am there was no one on the road. I did as many other posters mentioned, looked around at a red light, saw no one was coming, decided to go. Got pulled over and hit with a ticket. Cop was chilling with his lights off up a side road, couldn't see him at all.
Like I said above, I'm not one to run red lights but I agree that they're increasingly stupid passed a certain time. However, if I got pulled over I would not hesitate to tell the cop it's stupid to wait at a red light when no one is clearly coming while I'm falling asleep at 2am + hours and that he is even more of an idiot for pulling me over when no one was in any danger at all.
I only go through the left turn red light by my office. When I was coming in at 2am, there was never anyone else on the road, so I would come up and stop and then turn. I come in at 11 now and sometimes there will be people, but still not many. I go through the red light on my bike though, it never picks me up to turn the left signal green, while the others will just cycle through.
