Eating raw eggs. Anyone do it?

So I tried a raw egg last night, wasn't bad, didn't really taste like anything. The information I read online is divided as well as the opinions of people I know about getting Salmonella, Cholesterol and all that so I was wondering about 1st hand experience from people who might eat raw eggs. I've started taking in more protein recently for my diet as I have been working out and my job has me burning a lot of calories and energy (I do electrical/plumbing and all that handyman type work) in 98 degree heat every day (mm I love working on roofs....).

I read that it's best if you use an organic type of egg, like freecage stuff, but does that mean I go to an actual farmer's market and buy eggs or do I trust my local stores branding of "free range, cage free" eggs to be legit?

I've also heard I can mix an egg with a protein shake too, which I usually take after a workout.

My uncle used to do that like a decade ago, a few years back when he was getting back into shape he just boiled them and ate only the whites, also grilled chicken for dinner. He had like to 0 body fat (Im exaggerating) last I saw him.

Risk of contamination is something like 1/10,000. Risk of infection is lower. Risk of death is negligible unless you have full-blown AIDS. You're just as likely to get sick from raw vegetables. Organic/freerange is bullshit and only costs more. Any health claim from a source with "natural" in its name is bullshit. There's no difference in nutrition between raw and poached/boiled.

In my family we have this dish where we dip a bunch of cooked meat and vegetables in raw eggs and then eat it <_< I have been eating it once a month since I was a little kid and never had a problem. We usually just buy eggs from the grocery store.

A while back I read an article on bodybuilding.com that your body can't process the protein from raw eggs completely as it would from boiled/cooked eggs and it was a waste.
Take that for what it's worth.

too many raw eggs can cause biotin deficiency, otherwise there's not that high of a risk of getting sick

What advantage do you think you're getting from eating it raw as opposed to cooking it?

I actually read the opposite which is why I was asking for opinions lol. Something about how cooking the egg breaks up the proteins and causes your body to absorb less since it's surrounded by something or other, I can't remember it was late last night when I was reading it. I might do the poached thing or boiled egg though, before I go to sleep each night, since I read that taking in a little protein before sleeping helps out.

Also anything you read on bodybuilding sites is just as unreliable as what you read on nature-woo sites.

bodybuilding.com is one of the most reliable weight lifting websites around

Expired eggs are frequently repackaged, which is why it's not safe to eat store-bought raw. If you have farm fresh available, all the power to you.

The other day I was watching the neverending story, and bastion's dad drank a raw egg and oj drink. I thought to myself besides him and sly Stallone who eats raw eggs? And now I know.

By cooking (mostly burning) foods, you're also burning away some of their nutrients. It's more than enough to be a negligible difference, but not enough to risk uncooked food (obviously depends on what you're cooking).

Ehh, careful here. Grass diet birds are going to produce eggs that have higher nutrient count (specifically, omega-3's, vitamin E/A), and be generally better for you.

In 1974, the British Journal of Nutrition found that pastured eggs had 50 percent more folic acid and 70 percent more vitamin B12 than eggs from factory farm hens.
In 1988, Artemis Simopoulos, co-author of The Omega Diet, found pastured eggs in Greece contained 13 times more omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids than U.S. commercial eggs.
A 1998 study in Animal Feed Science and Technology found that pastured eggs had higher omega-3s and vitamin E than eggs from caged hens.
A 1999 study by Barb Gorski at Pennsylvania State University found that eggs from pastured birds had 10 percent less fat, 34 percent less cholesterol, 40 percent more vitamin A, and four times the omega-3s compared to the standard USDA data. Her study also tested pastured chicken meat, and found it to have 21 percent less fat, 30 percent less saturated fat and 50 percent more vitamin A than the USDA standard.
In 2003, Heather Karsten at Pennsylvania State University compared eggs from two groups of Hy-Line variety hens, with one kept in standard crowded factory farm conditions and the other on mixed grass and legume pasture. The eggs had similar levels of fat and cholesterol, but the pastured eggs had three times more omega-3s, 220 percent more vitamin E and 62 percent more vitamin A than eggs from caged hens.
The 2005 study Mother Earth News conducted of four heritage-breed pastured flocks in Kansas found that pastured eggs had roughly half the cholesterol, 50 percent more vitamin E, and three times more beta carotene.

As far as I'm aware cooked eggs are easier for your body to work with and the reason body builders ate (eat) them raw was just so they could stomach that much egg. Don't worry about cholesterol in foods, dietary cholesterol doesn't have a much of a link to serum levels. Cholesterol is more complex than that anyway, 'high' total isn't the same as bad but that is a whole other thread.

Mazmaz is right. You absorb much more protein from cooked egg.

    http://jn.nutrition.org/content/128/10/1716.full

The true ileal digestibility of cooked and raw egg protein amounted to 90.9 ± 0.8 and 51.3 ± 9.8%, respectively.

Looking at the FDA labels on grain fed vs. factory eggs will tell you the same thing.
