They would require quite a boost or be different enough from their AF3 counterparts to really maintain anyones interest.

Well, I'm not sure it really would. Lets look at how minor changes would have to be in order to make AF2+1 pieces useful, using one of the worst sets as an example:
Spoiler: show
I'm not expecting the +2 AF2 to necessarily unseat AF3+2 in any way, but it wouldn't take *that* much to even change the most useless set from useless to "eh~!"
Give me 1% more Triple attack and 3% Haste on Assassin's Feet +2 and I don't care what you do with any other Relic.
I think the whole static vs. random question is stupid. People are notorious for risk aversion, so of course they're all campaigning for the static augments.
SE determines exactly how good we can make them in either case. If we ask for static augments, they'll make them either useful or worthless at their discretion. If we ask for random augments, we'll probably be able to find a combination of stats that are useful given enough persistence, but how "useful" that will be will still be determined by SE.
I'll be doing +2 on the parts I actually do use just solely for the blue box to match the Emp+2 I use.
This is why I said if they are going to make static changes, they better make them good.
If you aren't doing something like this:
http://www.septimusprime.com/images/...escription.png
Then don't waste our time with it.
And I was being conservative with those stats.
You've forgotten how many hours people used to farm for Acc +2 on a ring. I'd upgrade all the Dancer crap even if it was as minor as the stuff I listed.
This is basically why I'm more or less rooting for the "random" option. When square has to pick ~five main augment options that THEY THINK are good per piece, the odds are much higher that one of them will actually BE good, even if it's a pain in the ass to hit. I'll take a pain in the ass I can take or leave over something useless no matter what I do.
It helps (on the storage issue side) that I'd rather have really good gear for one job than mostly good gear for several/lots of jobs.
Actually Byrthnoth, if you're talking about worthwhile (i.e. beyond the macro pieces they are now since Wyrm v Wyrm+1 means shit for macros) updates, DRG would have even more issues than WAR.

I agree that there would be some kind of bias. Still, I think there is something wrong with many of FFXI's random rewards systems. There's a middle-ground that SE hasn't found yet.
Also, part of wanting static stats is that yellow augment text looks awful and FFXIAH can't parse and make them searchable.
Take the MND back down to 4 or 5 (If it's not going to beat Chappel for a Potency piece, then it might as well not even try to compete), and make the Refresh 2/tick. As it stands, the piece is just for Accuracy and Idle. Might as well make it better at what it already does.
Anyone else thinking that Limbus is going to get an update now so we can +2 our artifact? There are actually more pieces there that I'd bother with for some jobs...
I'd like that, but I don't expect it. I don't recall them mentioning sea or limbus as content they were going to adjust at any point, while Salvage has gotten some attention. I think if they were planning it for the coming update, they would have said something by now.
I'd see this as the minimum and logical extension:
Wyrm Helm +2 : Increases Wyvern Breath another tier
Wyrm Mail +2 : Allow it to be put on at any point after the wyvern is summoned and transfer the support job, not just when called or zoned.
Wyrm Finger Gauntlets +2 : These do suck, but 4% Haste would make them your best Acc TPing piece. Where does DRG need that much Acc? Damned if I know, but I'm going to say Voidwatch.
Wyrm Brais +2 : Increase the Enmity loss from High Jump even more.
Wyrm Greaves +2 : VIT+10 on them takes them to VIT+15 for Camlann's maybe?
I would do a dance because Limbus was always one of my favorite events, and as a RDM there are still pieces of AF+1 that I still use. (Head, body, and legs specifically.) There are a few other pieces (SCH legs, SCH body, SCH head, BLU body) that are still useful enough to be used situationally. Being able to upgrade some of them would be pretty nifty, but even just being able to go into Limbus to farm +1 items would be cool. (And if anyone knows how to dual box Limbus for +1 items, I would be interested in hearing how.)
Do we really want more job specific af1/2/3+1+2+3+4 gear? :/
