Grocery stores get re-imbursed from the brand/manufacturers of the coupons.

Some even pay you to "take" stuff from their store.

After my Dad had his heart attack he would do this shit and confuse the living hell out of cashiers.

I worked at Stop and Shop when I was younger and I loathed people like this. Especially the people who used self scan with coupons.

Man this is somewhat inspiring. I'm definitely a coupon cutter, but it's mostly I look through the things to see if anything is interesting for the current week. I don't stock up, but then I live in an apartment and my mini pantry is stock full as is with basic shit like flour etc. So I really can't buy too much in bulk.

I definitely like to do the sales thing though even when it doesn't come to coupons. Like, I make my hubby and me sandwiches every week and I always base the meat for the week on whatever is on sale. And if I see anything buy one get one free or 10 for ten, I snatch that shit up for later.

I totally would stock up (probably not as insane as these people) if I had to space. And I probably never will as cali houses are small with no basements so I'd have to be a billionaire to have good storage for that shit.

    $(427.09-45.50)/30hour=$12.72/hour. Not bad.

Probably the majority of it. Food Hoarders isn't as attractive of a title as Extreme Couponing though.

surprised people are like "she should get a job!"

That's a pretty nice job for a stay at home mom as long as the dad is working.

I'm not sure how the value works out if they're stockpiling all of this. Obviously if you can weasel a means of getting paid to buy things (the $50 for buying pain reliever, for example) that's one thing, but if you're not putting it to use, it's far cheaper to not buy something than buy something, no matter how reduced the cost.

From the episodes ive seen, some of the people doing this are just straight obsessed but others actually need the volume of goods when they have 8-11 individuals in a household.

this is true, but even if some were useless, I don't think I've ever bought food for just a week for under $50 (like she did) for two people alone. So even if she doesn't use it all, she's still saving lots than if she wasn't.

You can store a surprising amount of personal hygiene products in a rather small amount of space. Shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving creme, and the like are big saving items my wife watches closely. When she can stack multiple coupons on top of a sale she buys a big stash of something and it lasts for 4-6 months, and costs almost nothing.

Hell, we have two dozen toothbrushes in a tiny little basket because when all the coupons were added on the sale she got them for a nickel. No one needs that many at once, but if they're essentially free it's worth buying two years at once and ignoring it for a while. We give them to guests without thinking twice, and you can forget your toothbrush in the hotel and not care at all.

If it's never going to spoil it's a good target for stocking up.

Yeah, it adds up fast. Even at ~10 hours a week my wife "makes" between $12-15/hr a week with her coupons.

Yeah, there's definitely a problem if you're just addicted to buying stuff, no matter how cheap it may be. Some of the more serious couponers my wife knows do it so they can donate stuff to food banks, shelters, churches, or animal shelters. No one family needs 800 bottles of water or 500 cans of food at once, but there's organizations out there that appreciate the help.

This is if everything she buys gets used. I saw like one episode of the show and I am pretty sure that at least half of the stuff they bought was a waste. Who cares if you get 100 gallons of ketchup and technically made $12.00 an hour? You could have made $10.00 an hour and bough real food. This is of course for people who don't have to stay home to take care of kids. For those people it is a decent use of time.

The problem is that people buy stuff they don't need, or that are plain unhealthy (junk food). Sure, you saved 250$ out of 300$, but what is the actual worth of what you bought? Probably not a lot.

This inspired me to look at the program my grocery store uses, wherein you can basically "load" coupons onto your rewards card and they'll automatically be applied the next time you buy that item. "Shit yeah!" I think. Then I look at what they offer, and I don't buy any of that shit. Gimme coupons for actual ingredients, not fucking Hamburger Helper.

I paid a woman like $3.00 last night for $150~ worth of groceries. She was using coupons for things she didn't even buy. Had me baffled.
