Occasionally there are team races as well. Races are a mix of luck and skill. It's not for everyone but it's the one thing it has on D3. That said, racing is not my thing.
Mmm, Is it like a personal challenge or is it a leaderboard type thing? Must have overlooked that when I was reading those guides. I enjoyed a bit of Hardcore on D3, but I'm more of a D2 person which is why I found myself more drawn to Path of Exile as its Itemization excited me a bit more. I'm up to the point where it noticeably more challenging as well and I'm enjoying the challenge, and trying different builds as I go, though I do have a few I've come to enjoy a bit much lol.
I guess what I've done wrong is early on I seemed to greatly outlevel my enemies because I'm from an era of clearing enemies to level so you don't get plowed, but in PoE this seems counterproductive as drops get worse the higher you are from the zones level... which could have played a part in my bad luck.

I know It has a lot to offer towards endgame from what I gather as well, The maps seem interesting, so I plan on sticking around til at least the Map levels and such, I know 40 probably seems like its early to a lot of folks on here who might be 70+ or something, but I mean... cleared the entire original game with pretty much a weapon I found in Act 1 XD.

The races show up on the character select screen iirc. You probably also got notifications in game saying "race coming up in 10 min." You get points depending on how you place overall and based on class. Points accumulate over a period then you get goodies for hitting point milestones.

And the safe way to level is repeat safe areas over and over until you overlevel a great deal of the aft. (Docks in act 3 for example.) If anything, xp areas are currency farms for later use. Can't speak for post 60 though. My SRS witch got boring and started playing other games.

Don't rely on drops, or traditional crafting much while leveling. Find the vendor recipes that will get you what you need. http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Vendor_recipe_system

Some of the most important ones imo:

    Phys% melee weapon/bow = White weapon base + Blue/Yellow Rustic Sash + Blacksmith's Whetstone.
The rarity of the sash will yield higher tiers of phys%. You can also save whetstones by using 4 of them to get the weapon base to 20% quality first, as it will retain the quality after the recipe.

+1 Fire/Cold/Lightning Gems wand/scepter = Blue weapon base + resistance ring (Ruby for +1 Fire, Sapphire for +1 Cold, Topaz for +1 Lightning) + Orb of Alteration.

If you need resistances, or you need a ring for the previous recipe, there's a resistance ring recipe too.
Fire/Cold/Lightning Res ring = Iron Ring + skill gem (red = fire, blue = cold, green = lightning)

10% movespeed boots = White boots + Quicksilver Flask + Orb of Augmentation

Don't ever worry about an upgrade ruining your gem set up. It is very easy to have more Chromatic Orbs than you know what to do with by picking up and vendoring any item that you find with at least 3 linked sockets with at least one socket of each color. You'll also find a lot of these are the vendors in town, so you can get chromes cheaply by reselling those items. Vendors restock their supply every time you level.

Do your Vorici missions, and you can force the number of sockets and links that you need on gear that you want to use without relying on RNG.

As for racing, it can be a lot of fun if you are into it (I will always run an Endless Ledge if I'm home). There is plenty for you to do in the base game without ever touching races, though. Don't feel obligated to jump into them if you don't want to.

Did not know about the Vendor crafting... thats interesting, and I'll definitely have to look into that, seems like it would make getting specific weapons much easier. Thanks for the info on all of this, the vendor thing alone will be a lot to take in.

And what level should I start looking into/investing in Endgame stuff, after I clear the hardest difficulty I imagine?

This patch, I wouldn't invest into endgame stuff until 70+ if you are strapped for currency. As long as your resists are capped and you have some way to deal with phys damage then you can stay in Dried Lake until the early 70's. Better end-game gear isn't really needed until lvl73+ maps, but what constitutes end-game varies wildly depending on your build.

Finally, clearing the final difficulty isn't important. People do it just to say they did it, but the real end-game (maps) doesn't even require you to finish act 3 on merciless difficulty. Personally, I still haven't cleared the final difficulty on any of my characters. I progress until I get the last skill book reward early in act 4, and leave the story progression there.

I decided to level a tornado shot ranger and I've been destroying. This build is sweet lol. I need to get a rats nest and maligros virtuosity...

For tornado shot don't overdue uniques. It will make the rest of your gear very expensive to get resist capped with life and other stats you want. I prefer rats nest. Because with a good bow your crit(if you are crit) you will be sitting at 60-75% crit. And gloves can roll damage stats already(attack speed, phys damage).

I played my TS ranger back in Beyond with Rat's Nest and Maligaro's, and I remember having to roll my quiver like a shield with as many defensive stats as it could hold. Then I bought a Lightning Coil and gave no fucks until a rare spawned with Soul Conduit during an Elreon mission in a fracture map at lvl88 ㅠㅠ

I managed to get a really good bow for fairly cheap and a really good body piece for fairly cheap. I am having a little trouble figuring out where to upgrade my other gear though...

These boots dropped for my Cyclone character tonight. I should dump the master mod and just yolo exalt it.

They pushed my resistances up enough that I can run Ele Weakness maps without worrying.

Now I need to reevaluate my rings and neck to dump some cold and lightning res in favor of flat phys and attack speed, but I'm afraid to look at how much those are going to run ㅠㅠ

New league starts this Friday. Seems interesting.
With the release of the Talisman Challenge Leagues fast approaching (at the end of next week!), we wanted to go into more detail about how you can find higher-tier Talismans by summoning monsters at the stone circles. Today's news post is a mechanical explanation of this system.

For a general introduction to Talisman, including a video and examples of Talisman items, make sure to read the 2.1.0 Announcement first.

You'll encounter a monster possessed by a Talisman approximately once per area. This is an average - the actual number can be zero, one, two, or more per area, but averages to approximately one.

The properties of the Talisman affect the monster fight. For example, if the Talisman grants +1 Additional Maximum Zombies, then a monster possessed by it will certainly have some Zombies in tow.

Each monster possessed by a Talisman will drop that specific Talisman. There's no chance or conditionality here. When item allocation is enabled, Talismans are allocated to players like other valuable items.

If a Talisman is lying on the ground, other monsters will try to pick it up to gain it's power. You'll then have to kill that monster to get the Talisman.

The set of Talismans for Standard and Hardcore are different from each other - you can find a few base types specific to each league.

Talismans are always corrupted (i.e. can't be crafted), but have very strong implicit mods. For low-level players, Talismans without other mods will often be more powerful than whatever amulet they would otherwise be using. Talismans can also drop as magic, rare and unique. Magic Talismans are a large upgrade over normal ones because they have up to two mods in addition to their strong implicit. Obtaining a rare Talisman is a big improvement also, because it can have up to six mods. Some magic Talismans with two good mods are better than regular rare amulets. Rare Talismans with six good mods are among some of the hardest-to-find but most powerful items in the game.

Talismans come in multiple tiers (of base type). The tier of Talisman is subtly but noticeably indicated in the art. The lowest tier ones are found by killing possessed monsters in the world.

When you encounter a Stone Circle, you can sacrifice five Talismans to summon a monster possessed by a higher-tier Talisman. The five Talismans must be of the same tier, and must all be of different base types. If you manage to kill this monster, you will receive its Talisman. The rarity of the Talisman you receive is directly influenced by the rarities of the Talismans that you sacrificed to summon the monster. There are five slots, and each one contributes a 20% chance towards the next-tier Talisman being of that rarity. For example, if you sacrifice three normal Talismans, a rare Talisman and a Unique talisman, there's a 60% chance of getting a normal next-tier Talisman, a 20% chance of getting a rare next-tier Talisman, and a 20% chance of getting a Unique talisman from the next tier.

Every time I get into this game I just end up getting deterred. It's a wonderful game, but holy shit at times. I had this sweet tornado shot hunter going on and I got some cool shit to drop like mjolnir and stuff, but ehhh after a while I just stopped wanting to map. The biggest issue was just getting a lag spike in a group of mobs and dying. I feel like if I had a better PC I'd hardcore play this game.

The labyrinth is cool as hell. Get a pretty nice feeling of dungeon crawling when going through it.

Perandus league is easily the most fun/rewarding league since launch. Stop being a bitch and jump in.

Every time I get back into this game, I go hard and then it ends up burning out for me real quick because the trading simulator aspect of the game seriously blows.

I trade very minimally. Playing self-found, while certainly not as efficient, is a more rewarding experience for me. Also, trade sucks balls. At least they've started implementing stuff that makes trade less of a headache, like being able to mark stash tabs as public so you can more easily list things for sale without needing 3rd party tools.

I got a tabula rasa for 94 of the parandus coins. Still have no idea what Im doing in this game half the time. (I've played off an on for several years now, never get past level 50ish or so before burning out, wanting to play a different character)
