    Computer boot up issues

Everytime I try to boot up my computer it just gets stuck at this screen:

Occasionally it will want to do a disc check on the h: drive, but that never fixes anything. I can usually get it to work in safe mode, but then I have no idea what to do to fix the issue once I'm there. Any suggestions?

    Try removing the H drive.

boot into safe mode w/command prompt and run chkdsk /f. it might take a really long time

Unplug everything from the PC including:

    - USB Devices
    - External HDDs

If that doesn't work, try rezn0r's suggestion of chkdsk.

If chkdsk doesn't work, try to run that same HDD on another computer to see if it's your machine or the installation of Windows.

I did the chkdsk /f, but it says that it has to restart for it to work, but when I go to restart it it never does the disk check it just gets stuck on the same screen.

If you boot up using the Windows XP CD (assuming you have one), you can boot into the recovery console and perform a chkdsk that way. It won't require a system restart since the drive isn't in use. If there are bad sectors, it can take a few hours to complete. If you don't have a CD, borrow one or use a PC that you can torrent an OEM Windows XP CD (without cracks, of course).

If your hard drive is clean without any bad sectors, then you can get memtest86 from a friend's PC, burn it to a cd/usb drive and check for memory errors as well.
