Probably nothing will happen, but you may as well take precautions just in case.

My precaution includes attempting to move when then hurricane is supposed to hit. I'm not that bright.

I've been saying this thing is overhyped, it will be a cat1 or tropical storm by the time it gets here etc... I took a shift sat and sunday 9-5, we are putting on extra man power in case we need to do any rescues. They are setting up sandbags at work, turning the building into an evacuation center, getting boats ready.

My preparation consisted of buying a new hat for my shifts on sat/sunday.

There's a fine line between "better safe than sorry" and straight-up fearmongering/irrational panic.

9 foot waves hitting the coast already and the damn thing is as big as the east coast. I think I'd go with better safe than sorry on this one.

Living in Houston at the time Rita was expected to hit Galveston was fearmongering at its apex. It was the month after Katrina had wiped out New Orleans and every news outlet was in prime "end is nigh" mode. While i do understand the concern Galveston had, given its low sea level and history with the 1900 storm, it did get a bit out of hand more in land. We had to calm down my younger siblings who, based off of what they were being told on tv, thought that Houston would flood in the same way New Orleans did. While the Houston is prone to minor flooding, usually once a year, the fact that New Orleans is largely below sea level and right next to water was lost on most people.

I'm not saying this is not being over-hyped, because it totally is. However, a Cat 1 storm can still have sustained winds of 80-90 mph and gusts well into the hundreds. That's nothing to fuck with.

Yea, this thing won't even be a Hurricane when it hits NYC area. Overhyped.

    Then again:

Steve D, a well respect Meteorologist who does a lot of Winter Storms and stuff for this area,

    Steve D's latest tweets:

nynjpaweather Steven DiMartino Studying all the data, I am becoming confident that Irene is driving the dry air out of the circulation.6 minutes ago

nynjpaweather Steven DiMartino This should lead to a period of intensification, perhaps rapid intensification this evening.5 minutes ago

nynjpaweather Steven DiMartino Moist air and convection is now consolidating around the center of Irene and reestablishing the Central Dense Overcast and Eye Wall.4 minutes ago
    Could strengthen.

I live on the 29th floor. Someone mentioned at work that they are telling people above the 10th floor to leave/move down. Anyone heard anything about that?
