I think it's actually from when people would use SAMs to skill up with Earth Staff and Seigan/3E.

In all the time I've spent skilling parry on NIN or THF I've got...maybe 10 skills ups? On PLD...well I did shield for a while so I got ~25. The other 300 some odd skills came on DRK/SAM/WAR.

The myth that I've always heard about parry is that they can only happen if your attack round does not happen at the same time as the mobs attack round. Therefore higher delay weapons/2H weapons = more parry, but I have never seen any test to confirm this. I will admit that I seem to get parry skill a lot when proc'ing GKT or Staff on NIN in abyssea, but it's very possibly coincidental.

One of my last low-man Omega runs I recall parry proc on Colossal Blow..
Almost died I was crying my eyes out laughing so hard..
Rode my parry skill gear hardcore back then.
